Manifold/turbo question

Recently dads turbo has been making some odd sounds, it doesnt do it all the time but to me it sounds like a whistling noise. Ive inspected the turbo and it has side to side shaft play so will be due a turbo rebuild soon, the question ive got to ask though will any T4 fitment turbo fit straight onto our Boostlogic manifold. The reason I ask is we are unsure whether to get the TO4Z rebuild, buy a brand new HKS T04Z, or just buy a different turbo all together. Does anyone knows if a Precision turbo would bolt straight onto our manifold or whether you have to buy the whole turbo kit? Any help much appreciated as always .

Slight shaft play is normal, any t4 turbo will fit the flange its the downpipe and intake which may need adjusting as some turbos sit higher/lower than others.

Up and down shaft play is normal, side to side shaft play isnt good.

In/out shaft play is bad.

Up and down play, is the same as side to side dude. It's in/out that's indicative of bearing failure.

A tiny bit is normal, but if it's any more than a fag paper, it's a sign of wear

PT turbo will bolt straight on, my old mans running the PT6262 on his Boostlogic mani. Personally I would change the turbo to a PT rather then rebuild.

I'll have to check for in and out shaft play, I always thought side to side was bad also. It does feel quite alot but may just be me being too cautious.

Couldnt tell you, cant see any from out the wing mirrors.

Was the turbo new when installed?, how many miles has it covered?

I would bet a good amount of cash that you have loose intercooler pipe some where , may have been losend in the crash ,

But to be fair we gave it some stick at 1.6bar last night and it was quick. Didnt pop a intercooler pipe at all.

The only reason I say is because it happened to mine! started with a higher pitched whistle no lose of power untill it got worse then spoolnwas affected then it popped off

Good shout! I had this once, more of a high pitch squeak though.

Does sound similar to our problem, but it doesnt do it all the time on boost, only occasionally when we are building up boost it whistles. I'll check for in and out shaft play when we next get the supra out.

Check the intercooler wasn't damaged, a crack could cause a random heat expansion related leak.

Inspected the turbo today, got shaft play in and out. Not massive but enough to concern me. Also found some scratch marks on the inner compressor housing. Maybe thats what the whistling sound is the blades catching on the housing.

Need someone else's opinion, dad doesnt believe me that it needs a rebuild or replacing.

Sounds like it's in a bad way if it has in and out play, as you have all ARP hardware in the engine I'd go PT6466 GEN2

Also, I'd give up on using the pops and bangs.

Havent used pops ans bangs in well over a year I'd say.

Will get other people opinions on friday and go from there!

Pops and bangs? Know nothing about this always seemed a gimmick. Thought about getting ryan to do a cal for pops and bangs for my next re map. Any thoughts... Sorry for a tangent chris... Also with the whistle do you run a wrapped manifold? Maybe worth checking it isnt cracked anywhere as david p says,heat expansion could cause a weird whistle.

If turbo is worn. I'd just get AET to nicely check and refurb accordingly,

Nothing bad about keeping a T04Z in brand new condition.

My T04R looked fantastic when refurbed, got a new CHRA housing for it (bearing housing was fooked)
