Supra valuations

I've just read a post in a classified ad where it was suggested the asking price for the car is too expensive.

We all love our cars and they're reaching a point where lower mileage good examples are becoming rarer.

At what point will the prices start to appreciate again to reflect this? Certainly not whilst we're bashing other peoples classified ads for being too expensive!

I see Honda NSX rise by 50% in the last 3 years, Evos seem to hold their value ridiculously. Even the better model Subarus Imprezzas seem to be highly valued.

If an RS Focus can still get stupid money for a chav body kit on a shopping car, I really don't see why we cannot start to increase the value of our own cars.

As a club we can probably dictate the market place to some extent and not fall into the "it's an old Toyota" line of thinking. These are highly desirable, iconic and if looked after collectible car. Yes, a car is only worth what a buyer is prepared to pay...but then maybe buyers need educating?

Surely the point of a classified ad is to sell the car, not raise the market value?

Jurgen's cars, for example, are top, top, top notch cars. And while they demand a premium for being such good cars, if he jacked the price up just to make these cars worth more, he'd never sell any.

I'd be well up for selling mine for twice the market value, but the fact of the matter is, unless it's in factory condition, it's not such a collectable as it would be in totally stock form.

Modifications have never made a car worth more money, unless it's making astonishing amounts of power. Even JamieP's Black Duck sold for not much more than stock TT6 money.

I said pretty much the same thing a while ago and i think this forum is soley to blame for prices not rising.

You'd be looking at 20-25k for an r34 gtr and about 10k for a gtt or 10-11k for a silvia and £6500 for a non turbo, even ropey s14's are going for around £5500

Yet an auto na supra can be had for as little as £2000 a manual at £3000 and i've seen auto tt's as low as £4000, its crazy

I don't think it's down to the "it's an old Toyota" line of thinking i think its that most people on here have had their cars on here for a few years and haven't paid attention to the rising prices and just see someone selling a car thats priced more than they paid a few years ago.

All you have to do is look at the amount of supra being broken :( purely because they are worth more in parts than for a whole running car :complain: Its crazy and how people can actively lower prices is beyond me as surely it would be good for everyone that their cars to be worth more.

It makes no sense.

Hey Pete, totally agree . I put an ad up a few months ago and got some negative comments from members on here . This was regarding price . IMO that as long as we have the odd few that continue to make these type of remarks on op,s FOR SALE ads , firstly detracts from the ad , and secondly will do nothing to help the guy trying to sell his car when we get knobs sabotaging his ad by questioning weather the price he,s asking is too much .

I think if this is to continue the value of the Supra will either stagnate or even start to fall . I know we don't dictate the market value , but we do have a say in how much WE think our car is worth . So as in my case after the negative comments I took it off sale , which I,m now very grateful for , as its not for sale now, and if, and when I do decide to sell it will be for a price I think reflects the quality , history , and overall condition of the car .

All i'm going by is my own experience,

I've own 4 supra's all na manual. The first one i bought 6 years ago for £3000 and spent loads on it and sold it for £3200

next one i bought for £3000 kept it stock and sold it for £2800, then exactly the same on the next one but this one went to germany and then there my current one i bought from keron for £1900

In between these i had an R34 gtt bought it for £6500 four years ago sold it a year later for the same money and the new own just sold it for £10500

I also had an rx7 type r bathurst bought it for £5500 and sold it for £6500 it would now cost around 10k for the same car

The 200sx i bought nearly 10 years ago cost me £2895 and this almost identical http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nissan-200sx-s14a-manual-2-0-turbo-79k-FSH-stage-2a-300bhp-rota-wheels-hsd-drift-/141401385252?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item20ec2de924 is up for £5795

It's simple supply and demand, price it to much and it will sit in the classifieds forever. Prices have been on the up for a little while now, but only for TT6's from what I've seen, autos and NA supra have not moved much in price.

Even JamieP's Black Duck sold for not much more than stock TT6 money.

I sold that for what it was worth IMHO, although a nice car, it was NA converted to GTE single turbo with an auto diff, pretty basic spec, cheap set of cast wheels, stock interior, and I got the full asking price of £13,500 which I was very happy with.

If I was selling the Goose I'd want ITRO of £25,000 as base car and spec is very high.

Exactly, Imho i think all classifieds should be locked after the initial add is placed and that communications should be done by pm instead of thread crapping.

I've bought and sold cars the same way. My NA6 (the shell you bought from me...) I paid £6500 for 8 years ago. My current TT I paid £4000 for. Less than 90k on the clock, masses of history, very tidy, well looked after, unadulterated model.

But then you consider my E36 M3 Evo that I sold 2 years ago. At the time, there were convertibles and coupe's for £6k. Mine was a 4 door 6 speed with 78k, yet was less desirable despite the fact they made 500! Ended up with £1200 and a £2000 Beetle!!

Andre's (skyline1) VVTI Tiptronic hasn't had a sniff at £9500. AndrewOW's car, rare as rocking horse droppings, not had any serious offers as yet at £9k. There are loads for sale at the moment that just aren't selling. Yet a NA-TT comes up at £4200 and sells in a matter of days. I'm not saying they're over priced, they truly are nice cars and judging by reactions to other club members, fairly priced. But it's a buyers market with ANY second hand car at the moment.

R34 GTR's have always been fortunes to buy. Escort Cossie's are stupid money. I looked at a 3 door Sierra Cossie and was astounded to see one up at £25k!!

Exactly. But it was sold in a matter of days iirc. I saw that car in the flesh, and heard it, and watched it disappear.

How many other cars can you buy with that power for that money!? It was cheap in many peoples eyes, as most people couldn't build a car like that with that budget.

Buying and modding the duck total cost was £16,200 but when I sold it I kept the seats and they cost £1200 with the runners. So the car owed me £15,000

It sold quickly because it was advertised at the right price, I bet it would still be for sale now if I had put it up for £15,000

I know someone who would have bought it from you for £15k had it been for sale two weeks later. And another few weeks after that, I would have paid you the same too.

It doesn't matter if it was an SZ-R, the fact that it was a high profile build, carried out by SRD, means that it is always going to be worth a premium.

Prices in the USA for low mile mint TT6s are now as high as £50k. Probably because they have restrictions on grey imports. Here there are still lots of cars being shipped in from Japan and until that ends or Japanese prices firm up then the UK price is unlikely to head anywhere beyond what it costs to import and have a importers mark up. You can get low km cars in Japan landed in the UK for as low as £8k so its hard to see how prices could ever go much above £10k - £12k before desirable mods.

Maybe if people stopped buying from importers, prices would go up?

We are only a few years away from the Americans having access to our 'pool' of Supras (UK, Japan, Europe), and I think this will have a massive impact on prices. Not so much on UK specs, but LHD European cars will go up to near US prices, and JDM models will also increase substantially. Even for NAs. I'm not sure how they will take to the Tiptronic cars, as they were never available in the USA, but VVTi TT6s will shoot up in value. Saying that, some of these are £30k cars in Japan now...

The issue we have here is we have seen supras go for silly money.

TTS for 2.5k My aero was £1200 so when we see a TT auto at 6k its to much. I do agree that unless the OP asks why its not selling people shouldnt say its to much.

Will they go up? who knows. If and big if the US start taking our jspecs then yes they will. The supra prices over there are stupid high. When this happens i will arrange to swap mine for a viper.

It may have taken you slightly longer to sell, but I think you could have got more than it owed you at the very least.

That's why people break them. Generally people want as much money back as they can. Had I been in a position to buy a high profile big single, I'd probably have paid £17k/£18k.

Wasn't the old Black Beast up for something like £21k??

This. If I ever come to sell mine, I'm going to tell people both you and Lee looked at it once.

Why would you do that!? *shudders*

I have an arrangement (when I get my finger out), to sell ours for £9k. I have some members telling me this is too cheap.

I must admit. After I have thrown £900 at it in the last couple of weeks getting it back to mint and through the MOT, I am tempted to keep it, SORN it and stash it in the garage and re visit this in a couple of years time.

If the car is desirable enough and ticks someones boxes, it will go, even for higher money. Getting these cars the way you want them to look/drive is an expensive business.

Some interesting points being made on here. I do agree about people doing the typical its too expensive on peoples threads. They should just keep it to then selves. We do as a club have an Impact on values

I do however think on the opposite end of the scale people under price there cars. If i was to sell my na I would ask around 6k no matter what people say.

The issue is there are plenty of dogs for sale that to the untrained eye look good. This effects are prices too.

With regards to mentioning the price someone's advertised a car for...

When it's obvious that a regular club member has advertised their car, I would totally agree. They know the cars very well, they know the market, they know roughly what sort of value they hold. But when a someone has joined the club with the sole intention of selling their car, and then advertise it for literally more than double than a similar spec'd car that is also in the classified section, is it not our duty to guide them in the right direction?

I have a sneaking suspicion that the OP was pointed in my direction. So my reasoning behind my comment on the classified post was this.

1, It's a '97 TT BPU Auto. Same as my car, which was provisionally advertised when I had a moment of madness at £7750 to gauge interest. Now, I had offers to come and get the car at that price, no haggling, but I wasn't sure if the car I was thinking about was the car for me, so declined. I also had PM's regarding selling parts seperately, which could have generated me upto the £10k the car currently owes me.

2, The car advertised is modified. Modifications are not to everyone's taste. So much so, that I pointed it out to a friend that is looking to buy a Supra and the first thing that put him off was the kit. Kit's are like marmite.

3, There's a similarly spec'd car in the classifieds which is admittedly slightly older, but pretty much identical in terms of what the car is, i.e. TT Auto BPU with a kit. That car's £4800. There's also a UK spec auto in quite a rare colour, which is a known club car, and has been owned by people who maintain these cars no matter what the cost. That's £6500.

All you have to do before you advertise a car is have a nosey through the forum and see what's going and how much for. Autotrader and Ebay is where you find over priced cars, and all the time that's happening, it can only be a good thing for the value. But the expensive ones stay for sale longer.

Well put it this way, at least I am not being a Merc, BMW for £20k for it to be only worth £8k in a few years. What you save on depreciation, you make up in mods :D

The prices are already going up & with fewer cars being on the road I can only see it going one way.

I think it's probably the same one i think.

I usually don't comment on the prices of cars unless there is need for it.

That particular person has bought a low milage facelift in a great colour (2.5k less) than what he's asking, had it for half a year, blown the turbos up and made it look worse and is wanting 2.5k more.

Not too long ago there was a 6speed tt gunmetal up for sale at around 11-12k but the seller didn't mention it had 8k worth of damage after telling me the night before.. are we to keep stuchm? and not comment?
