ok guys im taking the car to a garage Tuesday , not been there before , he hasn't worked on a supra , so ive told him roughly how to take the alternator off ,

undo the tensioner from the top ,and the top bolt

take off the undertray

undo the bottom bolt and the electrical connection

and out the bottom it should come

is this the correct procedure and should it take him longer than half and hour

thanks peter

I'm amazed at the amount of 'mechanics' that seem to have to be told how to do a job. An alternator is a pretty easy job on any car. I would have thought half an hour is a reasonable expectation.

As for not working on a Supra before.....a car is a car regardless of the badge and they all work along the same systems. I work on many different cars - in one week I can work on Audis, BMWs, Lexus....and then someone will come along in an old Golf or Beetle! they're all nuts and bolts to me :)

Just out if interest, if you know how to do it, do you just not have time to do it yourself?

This.

In the time its taken to write about it, it could have been out Peter. It's really not that hard and doesn't take any specialist tools or skills. Take a look at it and you will see it's very straight forward. Obviously you know where your time is better used, but it would grieve me to be paying someone to remove something as simple as an alternator.

simple if you've done it I suppose but I cant get the car up off the ground , and I tried the other day to look at getting it out the top but couldn't get the fan shroud off, so put back what I did manage to remove and left it at that, im not a total numpty ,but just hate working in the engine bay

You have to remove the top radiator hose to get the fan shroud off as it's attached to the rad :)

its fooked took it to the fella that was going to refirb it , he striped there and then, cant remember what he said was gone but he couldn't find a replacement, he phoned me back to say there was a company that did them but they are out of stock , so as the car is in the garage don't have the time scale so ive ordered a new one

rectifier it is chris ,once he had taken it apart he tested it and it didn't work , so then he couldn't find the right one from whoever he uses as his supplier , he found one similar but would had to modify the end , and didn't want to take the chance of breaking it , so in the end just ordered a new one
