Whiny power steering

Hi guys,

I've done bit of a search on this - my power steering is starting to groan quite loudly as I turn, and the search brought back someone recommending that I clean the strainer and replace the PS fluid. Has anybody got a guide on this at all? -As I'm about as mechanically adept as a sausage.

Failing that working, I'll be on to CW for a refurb! (If anybody knows how much that costs roughly, that'd be ace)

Cheers

Yeah the fluid level is fine, it made a slight noise when I got it, but nothing that I considered alarming. Over the past 2 weeks it got drastically louder and I can feel the wheel getting a bit rough as it makes the sounds. I'll have a look tomorrow, see if there's anything afoot, then get on to cleaning it and replacing the fluid. Either way, it doesn't seem like *too* expensive a fix :)

When was your auxiliary belt (fan belt) last changed? If it's worn it could be slack and not spinning the pump pulley enough causing intermittent power loss?

Belt is £25 from toyota and you can change it yourself, or have a mechanic do it. It's a 10 min job.

I had a few of your symptoms along with a fast squeaking on idle. All of which disappeared after a new belt.
