Sub pre amp required?

Was thinking of getting an amp/sub for our other car... however the headunit is a Sony MP40 unit with no preamps. At the moment the speakers are connected via the ISO connector, and there are two sets of phonos unused - one for rear, one for front.
Can I connect the amp to power the sub straight to these? I guess the amp would need to have crossover built in.

Yes you can, I would use the rear pre-outs and an amp with a LPF (low pass filter) is required. Most have this so wouldn't be a problem.
