2JZGE N/A idle over heat

hi all, today i was checking over my supra and she was on the drive, engine running and sounding perfectly fine. i sat down in the drivers seat an i looked at the temp and it was sky high, almost in the red even. i turned off the engine and i found there was steam coming from the coolant reservoir and a high pitch noise. eventually the noise stopped. i turn the engine back on and all seem fine. anyone ever had this happen?

Definitely something wrong. I've had the Soarer (admittedly a 1JZ) ticking over for, literally, a couple of hours to provide work lights without the temperature gauge reaching any higher than normal.

First point of call is tha Rad cap, these are prone to failure on the mkiv. Buy a new OEM one and see what happens, do not buy an after market one for an na, as they will raise the pressure in the system.

If that fails try removing the thermostat and see what happens if problem solved then stick a new one in there.

As above possibly the viscous fan, but i would have thought this would be more the case if the car was under load. Also make sure your fan surround is all present as this increases the efficiency of the viscous fan in the first place.

If none of the above work, get the water pump checked for play on the internals, some aftermarket cheap copies are prone to failure, but the oem's tend to be good, then look into Rad's if needed to be replaced by a new oem one again.
