Skinning update for Axle

So at the minute, I've got a couple of facelift inserts from the rear lights that Axle wanted skinning in carbon.

I've never done these before so thought I'd take on the challenge as each 'new' item helps me learn and find the different shapes require different approaches. Anyway, just thought I'd share a few progress pics so far.

Driver's side has been quite tricky due to the barrel housing for the lock.

Passenger side one is further along and needs about 4-5 more resin coats with some flatting back in between.

Sorry I forgot to update this thread with the rest of the process pics

Anyhow they're done but came back from the bodyshop with a couple of defects I wasn't happy with - mainly the lacquer having a few fish eyes in a couple of spots.

there were also a few small pinholes here and there that needed filling by hand with a tiny drop of lacquer/hardener mix. Whilst I was at it, I sorted the problem in the picture simpy by brushing lacquer on by hand.

At this stage they still needed flatting down a little before a quick polish up. So, each was rubbed down with 1200, 2000, 3000 papers then polished up with Menzerna FF4500 before being sent out.

As usual it proved difficult to get decent pics that show off the carbon well, especially as I had no daylight left and a flash just bounces off them!

Anyway... I'm canny chuffed with them given that I'd not tackled light inserts before. I didn't keep tabs on the number of hours involved in these but suffice to say it was a lot. :)
