Syncro fix

I am getting more and more certain my 2nd gear synchro is going as selecting 2nd when moving is becoming a PITA at times, if I am not moving with the engine running all gears select fine.

I was just wondering what the cost to fix it maybe just so I can get a rough idea what I maybe in for.

W58 aren't you mate? I'm guessing you'd probably be better off buying another box, but then again I don't know how hard it is to rebuild the W58. Suppose its probably easier than the Getrag

you checked the oil level at all ?

Replaced 2 weeks ago, was a bit murky but seemed fine apparently.

Ben suggested that too.

Try double-clutching when going from first to second, any trouble I've had with gearboxes, not bearing related, is usually reduced greatly just by selecting neutral briefly before the problem gear.

It even worked for the remainder of a track day when third gear was floating around on the mainshaft of my own W58. With some kindly donated parts I rebuilt that with nothing special in the line of tools, just the mother of all bearing pullers for the strip down and a deep fat fryer to heat the gears & bearings for the rebuild.

I still love the smell of hot gear oil in the morning!

I can't imagine a six speed box offering anything in the way of additional rebuild issues, it's still just a conventional gearbox after all.

Interesting that everyone I've spoken to says there a PITA to rebuild the 6 speeds that is, that includes LeeP, maybe its just sourcing parts

Thanks for that advice, I did see something similar mentioned on google when I was trying to find out what might be wrong, I use a similar method on the rare occasion reverse wont select

Parts, the non standard service items, are probably ferociously expensive, couple that to the labour involved and I can see why many wouldn't look forward to undertaking the job for a paying customer.

Unless there is something about the Getrag that makes it a complete bitch to work on. The W58 and the R154 are two boxes I had no problem getting intimate with, I plan to upgrade a few bits in the R154 whenever the mood takes me. I had planned to upgrade it prior to initial installation but decided to see how the box felt as standard first.

You can get all the Getrag 6 speed parts from Toyota, It needs a lot of specialist service tools and you have to disassemble a lot to get anywhere past 5th gear but it's not black magic :) There's a parts list and instructions somewhere on here, I'm sure.

The 6 speed boxes have a bushing that goes which can make getting 2nd gear difficult as the gearstick yoke moves too much. I don't know about the W58, but if it's a problem getting it into gear because the stick doesn't seem to be able to move far enough (rather than it grinding the gear) then this might be the issue.
