Rich's NA-T

Where can I start... ever since I purchased my very first Supra back in November 2010 I have been hooked (I feel like I'm writing my opening speech for Alcoholics Anonymous). Too date I have owned three Supras, the first being a white TT Auto bought from Leeds Nov '10, the second being a red NA manual from Ilkestone in Derbyshire April '12 and the third a black NA manual SZ-R Oct '12 from forum member "kniff_666". Over the last few years I have had a few threads up in Supra Chat documenting my tinkering on the Supras but now I have a Supra I am set on keeping I aim to put together a comprehensive Project Thread that will stay on the forum for years to come.

This is where it all began, a 3.0 Twin Turbo Auto Supra in white which I swapped my 1.6 Hyundai Coupe for. The most powerful car I had drove before then was around 1/3 of the power of a TT Supra even in stock, unmolested form - needless to say a nerve rattling drive home ensued which wasn't helped when I stopped to put fuel in and the car wouldn't switch off (damn turbo timers, I had no idea it even had one fitted).

When I bought it, it had a few goodies such as HKS SSQV, turbo timer, 5Zigen cat back exhaust, 18" staggered Ruff Racing Alloys, facelift front and rear lights, window tints, front splitter, OEM skirts & spats, active spoiler lurking under the splitter and had a recent full respray. Over the next few months of ownership I carried out basic tasks such as a full service, painted the dash panels anthracite grey, polished the headlights, sound deadened the doors with Silent Coat Vibro Damping, made custom speaker brackets, installed 6.5" MB Quartz component speakers, fitted a Pioneer AVH-3200DVD head unit, fitted a TRD panel filter, gutted the rear and installed bucket seats & harnesses, fitted a TIMS 2 BAR boost gauge, wired in a HKS FCD, painted calipers red, new front bumper lower lip and fitted higher grade spark plugs. Along with this I had the front bumper lip removed, front bumper smoothed and painted, active lip made refunctional with a manual controller, 3" custom exhaust system including double 3" decats and then took it for a play on the dyno at Dynodaze Hinkley where it made 404.9bhp at the flywheel at around 1.2 BAR.

Curborough Sprint Course was just up the road from me so it would of been rude not to put it to the test around there as well :eyebrows:

attachment.php?attachmentid=177805&stc=1&d=1385859584

Then came a very sad day, the day I decided to sell and attempt to be sensible. By this time a good friend I've known since school days had also purchased a very nice NA Aerotop which made the decision even harder! Anyway the Supra was sold to a gentleman from Milton Keynes who wanted to strip it, fit his forged engine and use it as a track car for his performance garage. I can't remember the name of the garage but if anyone has a hunch then please let me know as I would love to see my old Supras final fate.

attachment.php?attachmentid=177806&stc=1&d=1385859584

After a few months of being sensible (didn't last long) I had to be back in a Supra. A frantic Monday, hundreds of miles looking at Supras around the country and coming back to the first one I viewed landed me with this:

attachment.php?attachmentid=177809&stc=1&d=1385861183

A red NA manual that was pretty much as stock as it gets with the addition of a brand spanking TRD replica exhaust. This turned out to be in excellent condition and drove phenomenally well. Needless to say, this cured the itch but left me a little bored. I couldn't keep my tinkering hands away and soon my perfectly good stock NA looked like this:

attachment.php?attachmentid=177810&stc=1&d=1385861183

attachment.php?attachmentid=177812&stc=1&d=1385861183

I had opted for a full glass out, door shuts included Nugget Yellow respray with the ariel & badges smoothed, front bumper smoothed and rear arches trimmed. It came back to me with the addition of some colour!

attachment.php?attachmentid=177811&stc=1&d=1385861183

As soon as I got her of the recovery truck and onto my drive, work began re-assembling her to look something like presentable. The rebuild included new BC BR Coilover suspension purchased from Garage Whifbitz, Rota GTR's finished in gloss black 18" 9.5J ET30, refurbed headlights with black inners, facelift rear lights, new aux belt, tuner style wheel nuts and four new Falken FK452 tyres. She was looking awesome

attachment.php?attachmentid=177815&stc=1&d=1385861571

Then a real moment of madness happened. I left my job, took some time to think about future career prospects and flew off abroad for an epic holiday in which I returned with a fresh outset on where I wanted to be in the future. I got straight back into work with my previous employer and made a decision that a Supra was not feasible at that time and it had to go, I was gutted but I knew it was the right thing to do.

Fast forward to November 2012 and again I found myself hankering after a Supra. I was back in a position where it was a feasible and half sensible option providing I used the car daily. I had still been keeping an eye on the forums to see what the market was like for Supras and really didn't find anything come up that was suitable and in budget. My requirements were black, NA, manual, less than 80K and basically a good solid car that I could use a base for future tinkering.

I happened to be perusing the forum one evening and came across a post from "Kniff_666" mentioning about his black SZ-R Supra and how he may be tempted to sell it in the future. Frantic PM's followed and I arranged to go and see the car, even though he really (and I mean even until the last moment of transferring the money) didn't want to sell. It turned out the seller and his partner were expecting a child and the Supra was far from practical. After a few basic Supra checks and a ride out a deal was struck. No haggling as the car was described perfectly and the seller could not of been a nicer guy. I genuinely felt bad driving the car away from him!

Spec of the car as I purchased it:

- 1994 SZ-R in A202 black

- 2JZ-GE (NA) mated to five speed W58 transmission

- 64'000 miles

- Torsen LSD

- Yellow Bilstein suspension all round

- Drilled and grooved discs with Mintex pads

- Iridium spark plugs

- Celica ST202 steering wheel

- Heckler PCB mod for rear fog

- Aeroflat wipers

- Black leather headlining and visors

- Advan AVS F7 18" alloys

- Second de-cat

- Custom cat-back 2.5" exhaust system that retains stock exhaust tip

- Clear side repeators

- UK spec glass headlights

- Cobra Cat 1 alarm and immobiliser

- Razo metal pedal covers

- Leather gearstick gaitor

- "Tuner" style gear knob

A few pictures after it got home and was given a clean.

attachment.php?attachmentid=177818&stc=1&d=1385862721

Soon after I started fettling.. two new rear tyres (FK452's in 275/30/18), dash panels painted anthracite grey, OEM gear knob, removed pedal covers, smaller front number plate, full service (, new panel filter, new OEM distributor cap, new OEM rotor arm and new rear diff oil (Motul 90 PA lubricant for LSD extreme pressure). Then it was time for a dyno run at Dynodaze Hinkley again. It was quite odd going back in a Supra but this time with half the power of my first one. She made a very humble and very honest 162 rear wheel horsepower.

attachment.php?attachmentid=177819&stc=1&d=1385862721

attachment.php?attachmentid=177820&stc=1&d=1385862721

attachment.php?attachmentid=177821&stc=1&d=1385862794

After Dynodaze came a Motoria TRD style 3" cat back exhaust system, refurbed UK headlights with black inserts, Likwid art rear "Supra" badge, painted seat bolt covers, GReddy Speed Cut Controller, charcoal canister delete and colour coded stereo fascia.

attachment.php?attachmentid=177822&stc=1&d=1385863368

The wheels were letting her down and I felt I wanted the car to look more aggresive and something not seen on a Supra over here.. queue.. XXR 527's in Bronze 18 x 8.75J ET20 & 9.75J ET20 along with new steel internal drive wheel nuts from Driftworks.

OMP Corsica steering wheel, HKB boss kit, smoked indicators, LED sidelight bulbs, LED map light bulbs, LED rear number plate light bulbs, new OEM radiator cap (16401-62100), dyed black carpet, retro fitted active front lip, 40mm lowering springs, painted wiper arms, new auxiliary belt, painted scuttle panel and re-refurbed all black UK headlights were my next stage of modifications and the car was taken to Fast Show 2013 feeling more like my own!

I sat at Fast Show amidst the pooring rain and made the decision that making the car look good was no fun unless it had some power to back it up. Then something really naughty happened and this began...

The decision was made to pull it out, remove the head, rebuild it all using new OEM gaskets, TT head gasket to lower compression, new stem seals, lap the valves, new water pump, new cam belt, new cam belt tensioner, clean up the pistons, paint everything etc. and basically rebuild it into an engine ready for some boost then refit it!

After a session of late night road mapping down a nice empty private runway nicknamed the A5 the beast was alive! Boosting to around 0.5 BAR (wastegate pressure) she really was a flyer. I was shocked, this car felt savage in comparison with my previous BPU TT, the power delivery was brutal even at such low boost. The noise through the open screamer pipe.. again truly crazy and definitely NOT pedestrian friendly! I was sold on NA-T...

I was not however sold on the traction.. I needed some stickier rubber, fast. This led to a nice weekend drive over to ChazUK's place to pick up a set of Rota Boosts. 18 x 9J ET30 & 10J ET35 with Toyo R888's all round, 255/30/18 fronts and 285/30/18 rears. After some nice new red tuner internal drive wheel nuts and some final tinkering she was ready for some photos.

Well since having the car as completed NA-T I've used it daily and covered over 1100 miles in the space of a few months. Around the 600 mile marker the oil and filter was changed for a fresh K&N oil filter and 10W50 Fuchs Titan Race Pro S. Also in this time I went for a trip to Santapod where I managed the following times (still on 0.5 BAR):

60ft: 2.3067

330ft: 5.8455

1/8 E.T: 8.6212

1/8 MPH: 90.33

E.T: 12.9577

MPH: 115.83

Here's a video, excuse the commentary :D

I have had my driving fun for this year now though and have bought another vehicle to use over the winter. This means the Supra will be due some more tinkering.. which leads me on to the latest thing I've purchased...

http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?294921-Garage-Whifbitz-Supra-NA-T-Turbo-Kit

"Officially released as from today is our Whifbitz NA-T turbo kit for the Toyota Supra non turbo 2JZ-GE.

Using all of our years of experience producing turbo kits for the Supra TT, Skyline RB26 and more recently the R35 GTR and Toyota MRS, we have produced this kit with a budget in mind. The kit uses our own log style T4 manifold made from 321 stainless steel, these are built to last just like our 2JZ-GTE tubular manifolds. Log style manifolds can give a quicker response than tubular designs but are limited as to what they can flow. This is fine for the power levels this kit is aiming to achieve though, the kit is still capable of producing 600bhp with other supporting mods.

Straight out of the box as a bolt on turbo kit it will boost the power of the engine from the factory 220bhp to 364bhp along with a large increase in torque from standard 210 lb/ft torque up to 325 lb/ft torque, this is only running a light pressure turbo system of 0.5 bar boost so is perfectly safe for the high compression NA engine. This transforms a non-turbo Supra into a seriously fast car with very responsive engine performance achieving full boost around 3200rpm.

You can run more boost if required, this kit is capable of supplying 600bhp with supporting mods. In testing we found by going up to 0.7 bar boost gives you around 400bhp, this requires the fitment of larger 500cc injectors, along with an ecu capable of handling the larger injectors, all available as an optional extra part if required, please contact us for any advice needed for this.

The kit includes the following high quality components, no cheap rubbish here:

•Whifbitz log style T4 321 stainless steel manifold

•Borg Warner S360 T4 0.88 undivided turbocharger

•Whifbitz oil drain kit with billet oil drain flanges, Goodridge braided hoses and fittings

•Whifbitz oil feed kit using Goodridge hoses and fittings

•Whifbitz SMIC, standard mount intercooler

•Aluminium intercooler pipework

•Silicon intercooler pipes and clamps

•Turbosmart Compgate 45mm external wastegate

•Whifbitz 3” stainless steel downpipe, Midpipe and Borg Warner 3” Marmon clamp

•Stainless steel dump tube venting to atmosphere

•KN 4” air filter and polished aluminium intake pipe"

I've purchased the full kit minus air filter and hoping to receive it in the next three weeks or so once it's all been fabricated. I can't wait! I have more bits to tinker with between now and then so will keep this up to date :)

nice write up mate, good to see pics of your last soops too- will keep an eye on this one like I did the last thread :)

Cheers mate, had to start this thread with the pics all uploaded to the forum so I could have a proper Project Thread. Will be chasing some decent power hopefully :) A lot of my previous kit is for sale if you fancy a cheap turbo conversion ;)

Damm the yellow one looked awesome, had seen pics and never knew it was yours

Yeah it was mine, I did love that car but I prefer my black one now it has some (in the words of Jeremy) POWERRRRR!

Awesome thread! All 3 were lovely but the most recent is my favourite! Love those pictures of it on the road in the woods! Looks menacing! Good luck with the next stage of your build

Thanks Jesse

looking good mate, let me know what the difference in power is like between the log and flow style manifolds

I shall do indeed, I expect that the log style manifold won't be the best for peak bhp but I hope that I should see quicker spool times. I like to use the car as much as I can so I want it to be as street friendly as possible :)

Great work Rich, this thread was a good read tonight and it's nice to see the attention to detail you've put in. The new kit will be a very good move, I was never a fan of those XS turbo's once I started to understand the basics of compressor maps.

Keep up the good work, I'll be watching this one with interest :)

Cheers Homer, I have been keeping a keen eye on your thread too and can't wait to see the posts where she finally sees the road again. It was nice to meet you at Santapod too (if you remember which member I was, I get confused myself, then it rained which confused matters further :D).

That car is spotless, inside and out. Like black glass.

Thank you for the kind comments. It comes up really well for a polish with good old Super Resin Polish and I finish it in a wax from Autobrite. I want to do a full paint correction on it soon though as the 202 black is very soft and susceptible to swirls. Hopefully a Christmas present to myself will be the DAS 6 Pro and Autofinesse kit from cleanyourcar.co.uk. Link below:-

Hopefully some nice 50/50's will follow the purchase of the kit.. hopefully :)

I remember, you were the 7 foot black guy yeah? :D I was impressed when I saw your car, it was so darn clean. Now I read the thread I know why. Good to meet you too and I'm sure we'll have chance for a catch up next season, hopefully I'll be in my car by then so we can have a decent run. I don't think I'll be near your times, but the challenge is were the fun is :)
