My actual head unit sits just behind the dash at the corners. When you clip the front on it fits ok.
It's a flip face Alpine. When I took the dash off it took a little wiggling to get the perfect fit again.. Close, but no trimming!

You cant put it in from the front...you have to take out the dash-panels...and mount it from behind...if that mede any sense :D

In other words...leave your dremel out of this! :D

yep exactly... take off the dash.. there are loads of places which show you how to do this... for example the page on www.mkiv.com which decribes fitting the boost gauge will show you as it describes removal of the the whole dash. Dont miss the screws in the top of the panel though!

Then unscrew the metal bracket holding the stereo and fit your single DIN into the top part of the bracket (then get yourself down to Halfords and get a DIN pocket to fill the lower space) screw it all back together and connect to the car wiring loom(assuming you have the relevant adaptor cable - again from Halford's about a tenner maybe more depending on equipment). Pop your panels back on and you are ready to go.

p.s. dremels are bad... the hacker who had my car before me used a dremel to make his stereo fit... fortunately the surround to my head unit covered up this indiscretion.

Problem i have is there is nothing there!! when they have removed the stereo they must have took the cage/stereo mounting bracket out so it might be a case of needing to!! saying that i am very good with stuff like that :)

There are four tapped holes, two each side that the support brackets for the stock cd and tuner. Can you not lash up the stereo to these with metal brackets?

Thats a big bummer, dont know how you would get round the lack of bracket. I have to say that for the sanity of your stereo install and yourself, you need to try and source one. I would ask if anyone has one to sell on here, or go via the breakers, or indeed go to Toyota(!) and see if you can get one from there. Remember you might want to upgrade, and it would save you the headache when you do and also it will save you perhaps trying to sell on a knackered looking head unit.
