Well I was a bit bored so using the Quaife Gearbox calc tool I've put together a list of all the main combo's of gearboxes and the speeds attainable by them. Mainly of interest to me was the major differences between the V160 and V161 manual gearboxes...the latter being much better gear (yay) for dragging with uprated power, as you're not in danger of having to switch up to 5th unless you're running silly power...but check out the Auto with the UK Manual Diff - lol how fast!

That's actually really interesting

I want/need a UK manual diff! :innocent:

Am i Reading that right or does that read as an Auto with Uk diff is faster top end that a manual with the same diff? I also want a UK manual Diff:looney:

nice post. what would a jap auto with a uk auto lsd work out to?

wasnt there 2 types of auto?
i thought there was only the a340
if i remember the uk spare box i have is called a a341 or something. i got told buy the guy who fitted mine that a speed sensor has 17 or 18 notches and was slightly different.
will have a look at gearbox model number when i go look at spare uk box. who you work out the speed ratings of diffs and boxes.

thanks

Mark, The auto was only listed where I was looking for info with 1 spec of diff, if you can find info to correct that I'll add it in :)

I just need the Diff Ratio if it's different on the UK Auto.

Glad you liked my moment of boredom lol

Easy to find out.
If someone with a UK auto and a GPS unit would be kind enough to find themselves a motorway and turn OFF overdrive, then sit at 3000rpm, and monitor the speed with a good GPS unit. (take the speed reading about 10 seconds after a constant 3000 rpm at allow the GPS to keep up)

My old JDM auto was 56/57 mph @ 3krpm.

Yes Mig, I believe you are reading that correctly. But even the JDM manual diff gives a more than respectable top speed coupled to an auto box!

Great post, well done!

Im putting a 6spd manual diff on my auto in the next few months.
Looking forward to seeing what its like!

After the summer ill put the rest of the parts on for my 6sp conversion but i gotta try this with high stall first.

PLease let me know how it goes as I iwll be runing the same setup.

Will do mate,

Worried about my speedo being a mile out though.
Different diff and running 19's will screw it up completely

Not sure if the reading will read faster than actual speed or read slower than actual speed.

When do you plan to do yours?
What stall will you run?
What size turbo are you using?

Why 235/45/17 ? Isn't the stock rear tyre size 255/40/17 ?

255/40/17 = 1997.42mm circumference
235/45/17 = 2020.98mm circumference

True but where does the Speedo get the signal from is it the front wheels or rear on the supra.

I dont actually know this so kinda question for someone to answer?

Gearbox I thought.

Jake

Yes, from the gearbox. So the figure is altered by using different RR rear tyres.

Lucifer

Hell Yeah...... But if you were REEEEEEAAAly clever.... you could regear the Speedo drive to suit your application.

I imagine the different ratio of the diff will affect the actuall speed also.

Looks like the 200mph Lucifer project could be very interesting.

Is there any way to work out theoretical acceleration rates by using various gear box diff combos. Top speed is one thing but getting to road useable speeds quicker than everyone else is more fun.

Probably not....well not without a very complicated calculation taking into affect the air resistance/drag and the problems of tyre slip etc.

I think only real world tests can show which combo is faster.

Aiming for 550-600 with a histall so hopefully it should pull ok.

No need. You can buy a yellr box, that will allow you to dial in you real speed (read from a gps or similar) so that your speedo will correct.

Are the figures for the auto box based in a 1:1 locked up ratio?

As the convertor is always slipping, weather it be a stock one or a high stall application.

Its like trying to use the manual figures when you have your foot halfway down on the clutch pedal.

Does anyone understand where im coming from with this?

Alex
01-09-06, 23:08
I thought it did lock up at a certain point...
Yes these figures do rely on it being locked up.

I've got one of these on the bike (not sure if it's a yellow box or just similar).
Works well, you just need to set it up correctly with the % error, then compare to an accurate source (GPS via satnav).

Just out of interest I compared the Supra speedo to satnav. The Supra indicated 80mph = 81 on the GPS / satnav.

That's with 285/35 18s on an otherisw stock '96 JDM auto (with LSD, if it makes any difference).
