sequential gearbox

im sure there is a company in OZ that does one. Im sure its something like P fitzer or something like that is was a while ago I seen it and I think it weighed in at around £6000 mark and that was about 4-5 years ago

 

Interesting cheers will try and search for that , I am just thinking I am probably going to end up fitting a rps triple carbon £2700 , my 6spd gearbox conversion if I sold with my current clutch will be around the same so another £2700 just working out how much I would actually have to put with it to go sequential

Dude fitted a Quaife six speed sequential to a Supra for a customer a while back.

 

Chris Wilson runs a Tractive sequential gearbox from Sweden in his Skyline (which he rates very highly) but with the correct bell-housing and one or two other parts like correct shafts, splines & mounts the same gearbox could be made to fit most RWD platforms.

 

I don't think any sequential gearboxes are usually made for a specific make or model of car as such, except if a viable market for it exists, MKII Escort for example.

 

But a fitting kit can be ordered or fabricated to fit a suitably rated model of sequential gearbox to a particular car AFAIK.

Tractive, or myself, can make an adaptor plate to fit their superb sequential box to an auto MKIV bellhousing. I have nothing but praise for their transmission components, the best motorsport product I have bought in many years. I have a thread on the fitment behind a RB26DETT engine, it would be a very similar job behind a 2JZ or 1JZ. It's not a cheap box, but it's one of the best sequentials out there. Support is second to none. 3 strip downs so far, nothing needed changing... Lots of track miles. Ring Quaife with a hypothetical spares enquiry. Then ring Tractive. Then you'll know why I bought a Tractive.

thanks for the info all, so a clutch still has to be used ? , HKS do this bolt on sequential box for the supra I am guessing this would be a direct fit bell housing and then fit the factory prop shaft etc but I can not find a price.

 

Just running though some ideas as no doubt I will fork out for a triple carbon clutch nearing on 3k ,I could sell my 6spd conversion and would be happy to put some money towards this.

 

Chris do you mind me asking how much was the tractive box ?

For sure you still need a clutch!! I used a Giken one, triple plate with floating hubs. I chose the 5 speed box as I don't believe a twin turbo engine of over 2.5 litres needs more gears. You can swap the output ratios of the box in twenty minutes. It's the equivalent of changing diff ratios. There's also a full range of internal ratios available **EX STOCK** within 2 days from Sweden. They sometimes have used ratios if you are experimenting. It's FAR lighter than the HKS, far better made, and has amazingly good residuals (re-sale value). I can't remember just how much it was but well under 10K with custom bellhousing adaptor. Just use a bellhousing from an automatic. My prop was made by Reco-Prop who I use for all custom props. Not very inspiring premises, but the end products are spot on. Tractive have an ex Lancastrian, (or is he a Yorkshireman, that could start a war....), as technical sales director, Carl Nelson. But most of the other employees speak perfect English. I cannot emphasise enough that with such things as dampers, gearboxes, transaxles blah blah, spares and service support is VITAL. When an HKS box goes wrong or needs parts you have *BIG* trouble. Same with the Quaife sequential made under licence for Trust.

There are loads of Tractive `boxes in all levels of motorsport, working very successfully. Adding an auto or paddle shifter is no big deal. `Box comes with a stunning billet gear lever and a gear position indicator. Both are bullet proof as they are to aerospace standards. If you are getting the idea I love the things, you're right :)

1 question mate if i may, why do you need a 3 grand clutch for a track car? also i know it`ll be awesome but a quickshift box is only going to save you a second or so per lap, unless you`re competing seriously and i mean really seriously do you need it, so thats 2 questions then:)

I have been talking with Quaife about using their 69G, as it is not a priority it been on the back burner for a while.

 

Even with a cheaper box (compared to the Tractive) like the 69G You are still talking 5 figures before the dot to do it though.

I think If I do end up changing to a sequential box then it will be when I eventually enter UK Time Attack with a few sponsors under my belt.

 

However if you have and are happy spending upwards of £10k then go for it :) - you will need to let me have a go though hehe.

I think once you decide to go sequential any `box that will properly handle the torque will be very dear. It's also very important to consider re-sale value, as when you want rid it's better to have spent more if you get a good chunk of the purchase price back.

 

I did mine more for the fact I wanted to do something different, and the RWD Skyline boxes are weak, or if I converted it to run a Supra Getrag 6 speed, pretty agricultural. Plus I'm old and need all the help I can get :)

I am running a competition clutch and even when it was used on the road shifting was very snappy the clutch was so heavy and very on and off to be honest the clutch ruined the drive of the car I know its just a track car but shifting down and being smooth would be a nightmare with this clutch , I keep reading that the triple plates are the nuts stock pedal feel etc steve.l and paul.w both used them and those were track .

 

You are right though maybe a seq gearbox is over kill for my needs after all I need to get the car finished first if someone can recommend me a decent single plate clutch for 600hp/540ft of torque be great, I spoke to Paul he advises the spec stage 1 would be fine and drives very nice , thinking about it mate I can not remember if it was you or your bother that came and bought back your old clutch off me but how would that hold up can you remind me the make of it ?

I have RPS Lightened flywheel and the RPS Street Max Clutch on mine, its a little noisy and a bit heavy but the clutch is pretty linear on release.

The clutch i bought off you was my bro`s yeh, you have a good memory dude, i`m using 1 in my car also, stock flywheel, stock pedal feel and handles 600 all day, its centreforce dual friction buddy, anyone thats had 1 has loved it tbh.
