Has anyone replaced the standard floppy canvas parcel shelf with anything ridged, like an accoustic shelf (home made or otherwise) to support a sub? I have never seen accoustic shelves available for supras, so I guess it would have to be a home made MDF and sticky backed plastic job. My only concerns are; would the retractable elastic thingies be strong enought to support the weight of an MDF shelf + 12" Sub?

Cheers

I could to with finding out how much weight the elastic can support before going further. I expect it would be quite simple to make, it's just a case of knowing if the weight can be supported and if it would rattle arround in the back once it's installed.

i think they'll support a heavy weight, its just they wont lift it up when you lift boot as the lead will just unroll as dont think the spring will be strong enough to lift the wood up.

stand there and pull the ribbon down and up a few times (not too many the nieghbours think your weird!) youll see what i mean there is very little strength in it retracting.

Do you think its possible to get rid of the ribbons completely and replace them with that nylon cord other hatch backs use. You would have a length of cord hanging in the boot when closed but at least the parcel shelf would lift up when the boot is opened, just a thought.

Yea i reckon deinatly possible,
Get all the plastic off the boot, have a look at where the ribbon retractors are attached

take them off attach correct peice of nice nylon ribbon to where they did

thread through hole from before and attach to new wood parcel shelf. I think that would work.

why not use an air ram underneath the shelf to assist the normal pullers ...

ohh yo could do lots of techy things.

The nylon cord idea might be cheaper.

If you want to put a parcel shelf on the soop, the boot WILL NOT stay up if you add a MDF shelf (thick enough to handle a 12" sub) and also the weight of the sub, so you will get a whack on the head when you let go of the boot. Also, no one hsa commented on the fact that cars with parcel shelves have locations to hold the shelf in place when lowered, then the bootlid also puts pressure onto the shelf to stop it from jumping.

If you put a parcel shelf into the soop, you have no locations to stop it once level, and the boot has no fixings to hold it in place to stop it jumping. The shelf will then fall into the boot space and will only be stopped once the magnet on the sub hits the boot floor.

This will only work if you use supports to hold the sheld in place, then use some sort of ram (as mentioned about) to remotely lift and lower the shelf.
