Hello Guys,

I have recently registered up on here as I am after some much needed advice. I am a newbie regards Supras but not new to Toyotas.

Nearly 12 months ago I sold my Rev3 Turbo MR2 and I am looking at getting back into an imported Toyota and I have found myself looking at a few N/A supras and am currently torn between a supra or a Rev5 MR2. I have a tonne of questions, all of which are currently related to transmition.

I am based in London/Kent and do not see a lot of supras around (saw one a few weeks ago coming off of Gillingham business estate, roof spoiler, silver).

Anyway just a brief hello, and i'll try not to become an echo with loads of previously asked questions.

Thanks a lot for the reply.

My questions mainly come down to my buying options.

I have my eyes on two cars, one has everything I want, low miles, very fair price, the right colour, the right price but it is a Automatic. The second car has is not exactly what i am after and requires some work, it is significantly more than the first car (£1000 difference in list price across the two vehicles) but this one is a manual, and I really want a manual, I have pretty much no interest in an auto.

Is it going to be worth buying the more expensive one because it is a manual? Or is a manual conversion on the automatic a realistic option, I know it is possible but I do not have £3000 to spend on a gear box.

Is the 5 speed (W58?) a more feasable option? are the boxes common? are they readily availible? Or is it just going to be better to wait it out for a manual with all the trimmings I am after?

Welcome, good luck with your search! I traded in my Rev 3 MR2 N/A against a 19k miles Supra N/A automatic a week ago. MR2's are great, but the Supra is a much better car altogether in my eyes. It offers so much more luxury/style.

I was also debating about going manual, but after driving the automatic I was sold. I also heard the W58 isn't that great if you wanna go twin turbo. But an R154/V160/V161 swap would be easier/cheaper when you buy a 5spd because all the stuff's already there.

You can pick up good manual NAs for around £2-3k. Autos I'm not sure on price. Saying that, you can get a good auto TT for £4-5k.

If you want a manual NA, try and get one with the 6 speed box. They don't come up very often, but means a lot gets saved if you go twin turbo, or single.

The r154 is good for around 500ftlbs torque, so is good for a small single.

The ultimate is obviously a v160/161, but again, for a full conversion from auto, will cost you around £5k.

Just don't rush into buying a supra. You're better off holding out for what you want. It's a buyers market right now, so don't get sucked in by some traders prices.

What's your budget if you don't mind me asking? We like to help on here :)

Also, look in the classifieds section on here, always plenty of great cars, which have more than likely been well looked after.

Oh, and :welcome:

That is what i was hoping to here, my other current option is a Rev5 as i said previously but then sitting my Rev3 3SGTE in the back. There are a few appealing things about the supra, more seats, larger, front engined along with a few other bits

Hello there,

The vehicle price is not what is limiting my choice but my insurance, and my insurance says that I can only go for a N/A so no TT's for me... just now anyway.

I would be happy to pay up to around 3K for the right N/A manual, I just spotted a lovely white one in the F/S section which is currently on hold. My main needs are N/A manual obviously, Black or white (not to keen on silver) but then again I think I'll take anything as it comes.

I am not afraid of something which needs a little work, I am more than happy to get my hands in there.

I think from the information I have been given I will have to keep my eyes out for a manual rather than an Auto.

Thanks again

Don't know if it is too late for a welcome post but here goes.

Welcome to the club:)

Sounds like you know what you are doing, so good luck to you. If un sure about anything about the supra you wont be the first to have mentioned it so there's plenty of information about.:D

keep us updated.

Welcome Big T.

Are you sure after having a MR2 Tubby, an NA Supra will be quick enough for you? They are a great car for cruising but will not thrill you around town or 0 - 60.

As long as you can ignore being taken on by pricks in hot hatches who think you are a TT then you'll be fine. I had a NA 5 speed for three and a half years and loved it. Another thing to bear in mind is that if you do want to make any performance upgrades at a later date then there is little you can do with an NA to make significant gains. A TT transplant will set you back about 3K.

If your budget can stretch that far I would go for a TT 6 speed immediately, although NA 5 speeds are a wonderful introduction to the marque.

Good luck with your search. Take your time.

You have pretty much hit the nail on the head there! Stepping down in power is some what of a concern, it is also the fact that a N/A supra is more to insure than a Tubby MR2 but I am also considering the fact that this may help me stay out of trouble. I do how ever own a track prepared 1967 Cooper which i can pull out for a bit of fun if I start to miss that sort of thing. Well that's what I am thinking anyway.

It has crossed my mind that I will have a lot of people sitting on the back bumper, but that has been the case with the last few cars I have owned (had a GT4 before the MR2 around 2 years ago now) and it is something I have grown used to.

If I could afford to insure a 6spd TT I would go out and buy one no doubt, but insurance limits me to the N/A 5spd.

Thanks for the welcome!

Welcome along matey.

My advice to you is to get yourself along to the next bluewater meet. There will be pretty much every combination there, and enough people who would be happy to take you out in each (admittedly it's not the best time of year, but you'll get the idea). Check the south east section for details, or pop me a pm!

I've never seen the for sale numbers so low, only 14 on Autotrader etc..........hopefully the new year will see a few more come up for you to choose from.

btw as you seem set on a manual, then I would advise you narrow it down to one with a LSD and ABS as not all had them.

Are these the ones which also came with Blisten dampers?

Thank you very much, I may have to see if I can get up there in the new year. Would be very nice to have a look over some cars and talk to some owners, just reading peoples Sig's on here there seems to be some impressive cars around!

welcome mate :) buy right buy once! i'd say save your money and go tt6, atleast that way if you decide to go down the mod route you wont have to faf about changing engines and gear boxes! i know its not always as simple as that but most will agree that im right...as always :sly:

I can totally see your reasoning there, buy the best and it is certainly something to consider.

Who are you insured with and how old are you?

Could you get classic insurance?

Providing the car is of the right age I will be able to put it on a classic policy, I currently have my mini on a classic policy for a very fair price but every classic policy I have ever looked at has a limited mileage policy of 6k and earns no NCB, as a daily, I will do more than 6K but as you say it is still something to consider.

I am 21, with Footman James on my classic policy and Admiral are currently quoting me the cheapest.

Maybe most are being broken these days?

Its a pretty sad truth that a large amount of cars now are worth more in parts, look back a few years, people were pulling MKII escorts apart all of the time for kit cars (some very shocking at that and uncompleted) and no matter how much you dislike them, the MKII is now a classic! The Supra seems to be uncommon enough as it is... and another reason as to why I want one!

Thanks for the welcomes again!

Lee at SRD was talking about selling his manual NA supra the other day, could be worth a pm, it's a decent car.

Thanks for the heads up Jamie, I may be new here but certainly remember your car and some of its very spectacular videos!

I have a mr2 turbo rev 3 and a Supra... The mr running about 280 ish, i wouldn't really call it fast. I think an na supra wouldn't feel all that slower, just bigger and heavier. I have never been in a na supe though, although i was tearing about in some sort of lexus people carrier thing with a 2jz na auto setup and it felt ok...

Having driven the 5, 6 and auto the 5 speed is lovely. Nice changes, smooth. The auto is great. Not crap like a lot of them. Does what you ask of it and I found it very predictable. It's a joy to drive and so relaxing. Leaves you to enjoy the rest of the car.

The 6 speed can take the power. But it's like the pulled it right out of a tractor. It's a bit clunky. Maybe not the right word but you know what I mean. I also feel like I'm constantly in the wrong gear or changing gear every 2 seconds. But maybe that's just my crappy driving :p

Have you tried different insurers? Give sky insurance a shout, that's who I'm currently with and I've got a 500bhp. BPU+ auto.

Yeah I have tried a few and admiral comes up the cheapest by far, I will give sky a call and see what they can do but a few years ago I tried them with my MR2 and they couldn't give me a quote.

Oh really? The Mr2 I have my eyes on at the minute is around the same sort of power and I would have expected (not having been in a N/A supra) that the MR2 would have been noticably quicker? Statisticaly from what I have read i would have expected there to be a noticeable amount of difference, but if there isn't, that isnt exactly a bad thing!

I don't know what it is about the autpo but it just has no appeal to me, I know that there are some fantastically developed Auto/Triptonic boxes out there, my cousin a M3/triptonic thing and it is a joy to drive but I just seem to loose all interest in a car when i read it is auto. Hearing the 5spd is a reliable and nice box is reasuring.

This morning I spoke to a seller about a Supra and also discused a price with him, just to see what sort of offers he would be considering. He told me he would drop the price to £2000, that is for a Manual, with the blisten suspension (so hopefully it also has the other desierable items which were earlier mentioned), bomex front bumper, Doluck wide front arches and side skirts with matching rear spats, Blitz exhaust, removed spoiler. At this price it does need some TLC in various areas but it is just trying to figure if that is a fair price as potential supra owner.
