Engine Decisions

Basiclly got my N/A about 3/4 months ago now and wanted to daily it for a while till i saved up enough for a decent daily (then take it off the road for work). Turns out the guy wasnt the most honest when he said it drives 'Excellant with no problems what so ever'. A few weeks after everytime i go on a long stretch of road over about 40-50mph+ it overheats, So i have to turn the heaters on full blast to get me home and make sure it doesnt fully go into the red.

At first I didnt want to think it was the headgasket. But now i do as i found the liquid in the coolant bottle a brown colour. Do I change the headgasket or drop in a whole new 2JZ-GE? What would be more cost efficiant? Being near to christmas i cant afford to drop in a GTE yet!!

Thanks in advance guys.

I wouldnt be able to do the gasket change myself on this engine but im pretty sure i could swap it. The only real experiance iv had with this sort of stuff, I know this has no comparison but I swapped engines in my old car (Honda Civic).

Is there anyone on here that could do the swap?

New engine would probably be cheaper and easier, unless, as stated above, you can change the head gasket yourself.

Check to make sure it is the head gasket first, as the coolant does turn a browny colour if it's old.

Sucks about it overheating, though :(

Changing a head would be easier than an engine swap no?

If you have the tools and equipment we could come to an arrangement for my N/A engine from my current car as I'm building an N/A-T that will be going in my other shell.

And I also have a spare N/A head with cams and cam gears if it helps

Edit I'm in suffolk

Is it definitely the HG? I had similar on my old NA and turned out I just needed to do a coolant flush, as and replace the rad as it had gone stale and rusty inside.

Thanks for the replys guys, yeaaa basiclly it overheats on A and M roads, I may try a replacement radiator.. Listy did you have the same results as im having with it overheating? i havent found any whitish colouring looking through the oil cap yet? Ill get some pics up soon for you guys to have a look at.

I did dude. Mine was gushing water onto the over flow and bubbling like crazy, with the temp gauge rapidly approaching the red.

Did a full flush, and all sorts of brown coolant with rust in it came out.

Replaced the rad, job done.

If you need an engine or supply and fit let me know... But could be water pump? Blocked rad? Faulty viscous fan etc etc...

Thanks for the that keron! Could you pm me a rough price to swap in an N/A? Ok so i got a thermostat & a new rad cap coming. Gonna order the new rad tommorow too and hopefully ill find out whats going on! Would i be able to even check if the rad is bad if i looked in it by taking the cap off?

Oh dear, that is madness, and it's the sort of madness I am seeing a lot of. If you took the car to a proper professional they could tell you for sure what was wrong with it, as they'd have the right gear to find out. Why do people throw expensive bits at an unknown issue in the hope it *MIGHT* just fix it? I could tell you if there were combustion gasses in the coolant using two totally different methods in ten minutes. A coolant pressure test another ten minutes. Doesn't have to be a Supra specialist, we are just talking cooling issues on an internal combustion engine.....
