exactly what i was afraid of mate, looks like it's coilovers for me then :)

 

aren't the fluid links right at the bottom of the shock? I'm sure you could remove everything as normal and swivel the lot out and using spring compressors remove the top mount and spring and go from there. It'll be more fiddly as you have to do everything in close proximity of the car as you'll be limited by the shocks fluid line but should be doable (this is just going from memory )
