At what BHP does a Supra become dangerous / not easily driveable as a daily car?

I was browisng the forums, as one does :D , and noticed that JamieP said about his Supra that it was quite a handful, bordeing om dangerous and that he wouldn't take his little one out in it.

 

I appreciate there are different cars wit diferent setups, drag, street, different maps, TRC etc. but even taking those things into account, after what sort of BHP region does a Supra become a real liability? 500bhp? 600bhp?

 

Just curious what people's thoughts are.

I'd have to say that its not about how much power the car has but purly the way its driven when it comes to deeming if a powerful Supra is safe or not on the public roads.

 

When you say a 500bhp or 600bhp Supra this implies that on the public roads you are on full power giving it max.

A driver doing this in some public situations would become a 'real liability'. However there are situations whereby on a public road one may open up the full potential whereby you only put yourself at risk.

 

Basically I think I'm trying to say that the question can not be answered as you've put it, as it involves too many situational variables. And a large weighting on driver in terms of awareness, skill etc. etc.

for example my 470 hp single it is realy dangerous on rain because the turbo lag is big and kicks hard at 3500-3700 rpm, with dry tarmac is not a problem! The manual gearbox is more dangerous than the automatic one.

 

Thats all backwards isnt it?

 

Autos are by far more tricky with big power, unless running in manual mode you certainly don't want 600hp changing gear mid corner.

 

Plus you have 470hp and big lag, what turbo are you running, also kicking hard at 3500 doesn't sound that laggy :search:

i used to run mine everyday for a few months until i saved up enough wonga for a daily driver, mines running 581hp and for those few months had no choice but to drive it in typical british weather, had no problems tbh...mainly as i didnt drive it like an utter nob :) only problem....wallet was getting lighter!

I think power delivery and car control is much more important than how much power. poor power delivery with low power would cause more problems than a decent LSD with a big single. I have no LSD and dont have a huge amount of power compared to some and have had issues.

I have always said I wouldnt go for more than 550-650 bhp for a street car.

Not necessarily because it is dangerous, but more the fact that you realistically wouldnt really be able to use any more than that on the road to its potential, and I'm sure it wouldn't be too comfortable.
