Went to Option motorsport a couple of weeks ago with a mate to buy a boost gauge with him, whilst I was there I had a chat with what appeared to be the owner. I quizzed him as to what exactly he could do for my supe (93 GZ auto) to unleash some power….
He advised that the best solution whilst taking into consideration my mileage (78k) (without having to change/uprate any internals) would be to uprate the standard air filter and change the exhaust for a less restrictive system…
The two things which puzzle me (que BBS) are;
1) He said it’s a common misconception BUT you should never remove the 1st CAT as by doing so it will cause engine reliability problems
2) He also told me to never fit a fuel cut defenser as this also screws the motor in a big way
3) He would also remap the standard ecu (is this true?)
Your thoughts on whether the above are correct would be highly appreciated,
Cheers

Not to put to finer point on it, I'd say he was a dickhead :) for the 3 ;) following reasons
1) you won't unleash any appreciable power with an air filter, an exhaust on its own (meaning without decat) may give you a small increase.
2)Removing any cat won't make the car unreliable, it may give you boost spikes but the fact of removing the cat doesn't affect the reliability
3)A FCD won't in itself affect the running of the car (well, not until you hit fuel cut!)
4) You cannot remap the standard ECU
Personally I'd steer well clear :D

I'm sure with the board running for as long as it has been these points would have come to light by now. Geoff, those are 4 points you made, not 3! :D
I was tempted to visit Option Motorsport as they are not a million miloes from me but after reading this thread, I will be steering well clear
I rang them up to ask about hybrid turbos ages ago and they said the only good turbos are HKS(which suprisingly they sell ) all the others are unreliable and wont last long.
didnt think much to their customer service.
Hmmm, I've not ever been to option but I've heard quite the contrary to what is being said here.

Aren't the ECU's with the mines stickers on just remapped standard ecu's?

if you remove both cats and have nothing to control the boost (ie restrictor ring / controller etc) then you will bugger the engine as the boost will spike too high, but thats pretty common knowledge for anyone on this board,
mine DID have ,when I sold it to the lucky beggar on this BBS, 1 cat + stock exhaust / back box will be totally and utterly fine, as you can tell by the boost on the boost gauge. it basically added great spool up times and fractionally higher boost.
both cats out and on stock backbox/zaust i believe is similar to a totally performance exhaust + restruictor ring, i.e about 1.2 bar max, although dont quote me on that one!!!!!
all the other stuff he talked about is b**l**x
The exhaust and filter change are mods most so called tuners will recommend because they're high profit and minimum hassle.
The HKS FCD has been known to cause problems as have removing both CATS without an FCD.
If you replace both CATS and fit a TRL FCD and a restrictor ring/boost controller to limit boost you'll be fine.
Reprogramming the std ECU ? :baa:
Don't give him your business.
In Japan there are companies that can remap the standard ECU by fitting a new EPROM board inside. I think I remember Paul W mentioning he was looking at offering this service but might be wrong.

Oh I forgot to add he also told me to "always, always run on Optimax....":conf:

No names mentioned but a customer suffering from some flat spots and hesitation after fitting a double decat and FCD went to a 'tuning' garage (over west)
They told him that they had to send the car back to Japan for re-programming the ECU - but before they could do that they had replace the stock exhaust to put the sensor back as this was an integral part of the remapping process
So the cat overheating sensor does that does it?
Needless to say - some colder plugs sorted him out!!
Frightening or what!
:(
Steer CLear guys.
Nana seems very humble, and kiss assy, but dont know NOWT about supras, and oh did I mention that we paid £350 for a sard 280LPH intakn pump, and got a sard item out of another lexus/toyota, and it doesnt flow 280lph.
His guys are jokers, I sat with one, he made me laugh, trying to explain how turbos work, when indeed he didnt know himself. LOL
Oh, did I mentino he charges £600 to setup your little HKS EVC controller, and two full fuel tanks???????
And he thing fitting s BCC/ is remapping the stock ecu. He told me that remap crap a few years ago.
Point made I think. theyre a Joke!
:D
Not a fan then? :innocent:
Well I never, what made you say that .... :innocent: :D
