Just spent last hour or so getting frustrated with replacing the rattly rubber bits. Managed to get three of the four screws out using blowtorch and brute force. Unfortunately managed to completely strip andthe knacker the last screw which is still stuck and now my screwdriver just whirls round and round.

Any advice on how I can get it out now?

You could try an impact screwdriver, otherwise you'll have to drill it out. It's like a big metal screwdriver that you hit with a hammer that makes it rotate a bit, Halfords sell them amongst other places.

cant you cut the rubber away and get a pair of mole grips on the head of the screw.? obviously taking care not to scratch your paintwork

something called a easyout
you drill a hole tells you what size to use then you insert the tool and it grips the in side of the hole witch removes the screw.
i will have a look in my tool box if not will pinch you one from work when iam back on shift peace off piss to use!!!

impossible to use on these as they are very small screws and very little room to get at them

This worked for me (and many others on the forum):

1) Cut the rubbers away completely (Which you most likely have done already)

2) Use a hacksaw blade to cut a slot into the head of the screw, the deeper the btter, but be sure to leave enough metal so it doesn't weaken the screw head

3) Use a LARGE flathead screwdriver, preferably on a ratchet to remove each of the screws.

It took about 30 mins to replace these start to finish, and I had to use the above method on 3 of the screws!

mkiv.com hatch rattel (http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/hatch_rattle/index.html)

I think I paid about 20 quid for mine as I changed the top ones as well as the bottom ones.

When I changed mine, I did the bottom ones using the hacksaw method. As long as you are dead careful you should sort it.
The part no. I used was

T67293-14051 = £4.18 + VAT each

But then you need some new screws cos you've knackered the old ones, and I didn't get any with above part no.
I THINK they are about 5mm. Someone correct me??

Had exactly the same problem on me mk3 before! So much for improving as we evolve then! :D
Just cut away the rubbers and get a pair of girt big mole grips on 'em. Takes time, but there you go.

I bought some from Toyota last month. They cost me £28. Thats for top and bottom rubbers. Took 2 days to arrive.

Victory:)

Eventually manged to get sufficient grip with mole to release. I think it all comes down to heating the screws hot enough. The one that I knackered was my first attempt and i only took blowtorch to it for a few seconds. the other three i gave a good 10 second blast then attacked immediately with screwdriver.

Thanks for all the advice:thumbs:
