running with no intercooler

on a low boost na-t aplication is it ok to run with no inetrcooler? ive been thinking about it and ive piped the outlet from my turbo straight into the inlet.

i was thinking , how hot can theintake temps get in 6 inches of pipe moving at the rate its being drawn in at?

i really dont want to fit a fmic and it looks so tidy without miles of exess pipeing. not to mention boost is as good as instant. i can get the wastegat open just reving it on the spot.

so the question is , will it damage the car running 7psi directly into the inlet from the turbo seeing as the air is being drawn from outside the engine bay.

shold i just stop be lazy (because thats what it comes down to) and find a stock smic from a tt and fir that.

This is probably no help to you at all as I'm not particularly technically minded, but I often use the theory that if Mr T felt it was necessary, it probably was.

I think a FMIC is meant to cool the air after it has been thru the compressor of your turbo, not sure on the type of temps but I imagine it gets very hot being compressed at those high rpms..

As you know, cool charge air increases power...

When air gets compressed, it's getting hot.r engine is getting hot air right now. I'd be careful. The intercooler is there to cool the comptessed air down.

Did you think of getting a sidemount IC like the turbo stock one. Might help to keep the pipes short

The intercooler is there to reduce intake temps after compression, it's not to cool the air after it's been up the intake pipe

The air straight out of the turbo can be well over 100degC, so they are pretty important. Low boost applications can get away without them, but the end result is way down on power compared to intercooled.

If your fitting a intercooler then get some decent alloy piping and good joiners that way there is instant power where as the original pipes were rubber they would blow up before the boost got into the engine resulting in slow boost.

IC's allow higher boost, low boost wont really need an IC, will reduce lag too!

It will be fine up to 7psi.

Note: You may need to back off the ignition timing.

Yea it will base timed at 6 dbtdc I was thinking if it works ok of adding water mist and upping boost

That is effectively what I'm doing. The only difference is I'm replacing the y pipe with a charge cooler.

Your performance will drop dramticly. U can get really tidy water cooled intercoolers that sit in the engine bay no bigger than a small car battery. Better performance than a fmic. But there not cheap.. If u still insist on no cooler go water injection to help

yea i liemythe idea of a small charge wter cooled charge cooler , i know i can get them at a good price . allways wonderd how effective thse are though with the hot engine water running through them

You dont use the engine water, you have a water container, a pump, charge cooler and a a small radiator to cool the water. had one fitted in a escort RST many years ago.

Easier to simply fit a ebay fmic id say.

well that defys the piont. dont want complicated and time consumeing. i dont want a fmic in the the grill so ity looks like ill be fitting the oem tt side mount cheap effective and hidden.

Adapt a SMIC to fit

Something a bit different. What if you had the same intercooler as the Gt4, the one that is submerged in coolant. Now take that design and thin it out and wrap it around the whole piping system for the turbo. So the turbo pipe work effectively becomes one large long intercooler and you are able to hold a lamanant flow of air all the way through!?

Maybe something for low boost vehicles.

Just something we we're discussing/designing in class a few days ago. Any thoughts on that one?

Try it, get an intake temp sensor and see how it rolls. Water injection isn't that expensive and could be an option.
