Replacing cam belt? Crank pulley might go...

This is what I have just been told anyway by my local garage. I booked my car in for a service here as they have a great reputation and a very competitive price (full service inc cambelt = £450). One of the staff said that his and another client's Supra crank pulley belt 'might go' after they have done the cam belt change. Does this sound correct? I don't really want a problem like this to crop up with Japfest in less than a month.

 

One other thing that worried me slightly is the fact that one member of staff shouted 'is that the turbo? No it can't be - it hasn't got a bonnet scoop'. Oh dear what have I done.:(

I don't see why the crank pulley would go because the belt has been changed.

 

Take it back ASAP, or once they've changed the belt, do the Tippex test to keep an eye on it :)

 

Sorry I think he meant the accessory belt would go, not the crank pulley. He said it needs to be removed to get to the cam belt and they are held on with a substance that once taken off doesn't stay on as well.

 

Does this make sense or sound like total garbage?

Not sure what you mean by "substance that once taken off doesn't stay on as well".

 

The accessory belt needs to be removed along with the cam belt covers, crank pulley and other bits & pieces. The crank pulley bolt can be extremely tight but they must not apply heat to the bolt. This could destroy the crankshaft front oil seal which sits behind the crank pulley and cam belt.

What a total load of rubbish, if the aux belt needs replacing it would be fairly obvious, it wont need

replacing just because the cam belts been changed.

 

Is the aux belt showing signs of any cracks in its smooth side ? if not then its probably fine and if it

does need changing its hardly rocket science to do.

 

I would be concerned more about the crank pulley depending on how they got it off

You really want to spend your money in a more trustworthy place.tried& proven. Generally if you get a bad vibe, it's for a reason imo. Couldn't you try whifbitz?

I think i'd find somewhere else just based on the above comment

Whifbitz would be great if I lived near London but it's quite a way to go (with someone to take me and bring me back too). I did look at a lot of other local places but everywhere (even the 'perfomance specialist') garages sounded incompetent and wanted £700+

 

I will wait and see how they get on, I just called them up to give advice on loosening the crank pulley bolt so thanks for that dnk and markssupra.

Maybe they routinely use a blowtorch to free up the crank pulley, after which it probably will "go" because they will damage the rubber element. TBH no place with a great reputation should be doing this.

 

Also, I hate the term "full service" because there is simply no such thing for a Supra - or if there was it would cost an arm and a leg. There are two official services (A and B) and then many other items which get changed at irregular intervals. Find out exactly what they will inspect / change before deciding if the price is good or not.

What is the garage doing for £450 ? what do they mean by full service ?

 

Just collected my car which is running fine and the invoice is £440.14 (Labour = 198.41, Parts = 138.38 + VAT) and includes the following:

 

Cambelt Kit

Oil Filter

Air Filter

6 Spark Plugs

 

Work done:

 

Carry out full service - change oil filter, air filter, spark plugs. Strip, clean and adjust brakes. Lubricate doors and door locks, door hinges. Check and adjust tyre pressure. Supply and fit cambelt kit. Pre MOT vehicle. Road test vehicle.
