my oil leak

i originally thought my oil leak was from the oil filter but i have now had a better look and its all down the side of the engine above and towards the front of the oil filter.

ive also checked my powerstearing fluid and its low but my engine oil is ok , lower than it was when i first bought the car but he overfilled it above the max anyway :/

You'll find you need to replace the cam cover seals, they go hard

and shrink and dont seal properly, also the bolts that hold

the covers in place have washers with seals on them which

you should also replace.

Do not overtighten them on hard seals as the covers are prone

to crack and snap the lug off where the bolts go

Clean the oil off with brake cleaner then run the car up to

see where its leaking from

You should also see where your power steering fluid is going as

they dont use fluid unless its got a leak.

nice one mate

it looks fine at the top

the leak looks like its below all of this by the oil filter

Like i said clean it all off then run the car.

Better to do this on a ramp then you can see exactly whats happening.

Also can you donate you vs wing to CJ please, its for a good cause

lol yeah mate i put a note in the thread that i would be happy to :)

if it was leaking form my oil filter (which is full of oil around it) when been driven could it go all over the side of the engine towards the front?

because maybe it is what i originally thought

ill have to get it all clean and see

can you recommend a good degreaser?

nice 1

the power stearing pipes dont go down that way do they?

The power steering pump is in the right place to cause the oil your finding, its just below the p/s reservoir.

Check the oil/fluid thats on the block as it should be a redish colour if

its power steering fluid.

If its engine oil it'll be pretty much black unless its very new

my power steering fluid is brown in the res mate

i guess this is really old oil and could do with a full change

also the oil on the engine is the same colour (brown)

the oil found on the floor is also not very dak

what was the oil like left on the floor when i took the car to you

could you tell what it was mate

Clean it all down properly as suggested. Once it's spotless you will be able to easily identify where the oil is coming from by starting the car and using a torch to see.

Did you make sure the oil filter was tight like I suggested? I'm not 100% certain but I think over filling the oil can cause seals to fail. Another thing to check is the oil pressure switch, that's just to the left of where the oil filter is.

yeah mate its hard to get there ill have to strip everything in that area

will have to see what the weather is like tomorrow bud

Don't strip anything off bud. Well, other than the under tray.

If you get the car up on axle stands and remove the undertray you will get reasonable access to that area in order to give it a good clean. You will be able to get a much better view from there too.

Otherwise you will basically need to take the TB off to get in for a proper clean.

I didn't look at it that closely to be honest.

If its the same fluid as in the p/s/r and its going down then that looks like it

could be your problem.

Could be a hose or a seal on the pump, or even a crack.

As Scott says though check the oil filter is tight and check the engine oil level

and the autobox fluid level while your at it.

ive checked the autobox the right way and thats perfect mate and the engine oil is at the right level but previous owner did overfill it slightly

my power steering fluid is below the min mark below the bottom of it, i should have checked this but this is the only fluid level i didnt check :(

so ill get that filled too with fresh fluid

Not much point doing a fluid change if its leaking, just top it up to the max level

and check it, if its going down you have a leak
