How To: Make and Fit Solid Shifter Bushes

Showed my new 6 speed how much I love it by knocking these up this morning as mine were shot, plus it tightens the shift up nicely apparently!

Sorry about my horribly grubby hands, think I need a manicure! :limp:

Firstly; Remove the cradle from the gearbox, 2x 13mm bolts and 1 bolt 13mm with 15mm nut.

My bushes were so worn that the centres almost fell out, so you can just pull them out by hand. If not, either leave the centres in for now or cut them out with a sharp blade. I think it makes it easier if you cut it out first.

Cut the metal of the bush with a hacksaw, be careful not to cut into the shifter cradle itself. One of my bushes slid straight out after cutting, which was nice. The other required pressing out in a vice, no need to use a press its overkill ;) Just make sure that its properly supported, as the cradle is apparently quite easy to break. You can use a couple of old sockets to press it out, I made a couple of tools from some billet offcuts.

If you have bought your shifter bushes, copperslip them up and whack em in! Your done. If not, keep reading.

Here is a quick drawing of the bush with dimensions. It says metres, but it's obviously in CM! Here are some pics of the process, the hole in the centre is about 9.2mm I think, A 9mm drill bit is good enough.

The hole in the cradle is about 25.1 or 25.2 mm I turned the bush to 25.3 and slowly took material away until it was a perfect fit in the cradle.

These took me about 30 mins to knock up in all, worth it if you have access to a lathe and some scrap aluminium bar, as I think a set of these is normally about £50. Any questions, as always just ask!
