Leaking U.K. headlamps

When I bought my Supra the headlamps were so bad it was not safe to drive it at night, so treated it to a new set of U.K. glass lamps.

However, these new lamps have been a PITA randomly filling up with water, thinking that it was the HID's letting the water in, I have sealed up the bulb fittings with silicone twice and still the lamps randomly filled up.

By chance I found that adjusting the bonnet stops cured the leak on either one side or the other, so today I had them out again for another inspection.

This time I have eventually found the cause, during manufacture insufficient sealant had been applied to the outside edges of both lamps and water passing between bonnet and seal was running into the lamp that was on the side away from the kerb but not into the lamp on the the kerb side. :looney:

Bad Mr T. :spank:

If you treat yourself to a new set, make sure you check for this fault, if I scored two duffs out of two there must be more of them out there, it's difficult to see which is probably why it wasn't noticed by the manufacturer.

I've had them for more than a year, all this time I suspected it was the HID's letting it in and have been filling every orifice around them with silicone.

I have sealed the gaps found with silicone which should cure it, but I will still have a go at Mr T for replacements.

If you switch from J-spec headlights to glass headlights, I'd also recommend buying new low beam bulbs (9006/HB4). The bulbs from the J-spec headlights can be made to fit but the low beam bulbs are narrower so may not seal properly in the slightly wider openings in the UK headlights.
