Hey Chaps and Chappettes!!!!

Just wondering if any of you from experience had any recommendations whats needed for a decent track day Supra?

I've got a 94 tt 6 speed BPU'd, and was wondering if there was anything apart from the obvious anyone can think off?

(Obvious being decent brakes, loadsa tires etc...)

Any suggestions or hints would be welcome![GRIN][/GRIN]

muchas gracias

Good brakes and good suspension are the key ingredients.

A reasonably quiet exhaust probably.

You may also want to add a cage, bucket seats and harnesses.

I am BPU and just need to get the cage installed and brakes upgraded then I will be hitting the track!

I will keep it civilised for the road but remove as much weight as possible.

The other aspect that many don't consider is getting some driver training.

Do you guys think the UK spec brakes are enough?

It won't be purely for track days but i plan to do a few!!

How about oil coolers ans all that stuff? Is there any need for those?

Thought about a cage, but looks tricky to get into once fitted! I am 6"5 and it could look a little funny if i just pop out for some milk? lol

Agreed, get tuition as you'll be amazed at how slow you are unless ofcourse your

already a driving god :)

Quiet exhaust is also a very good idea and i'd also not bother with any bodykit stuff

either as it adds weight and will probably just be ripped off the first time you pop it

in the gravel.

UK spec brakes are more than up to doing track days, do a fluid change

would be a good idea and some CW trackday pads

A cage isn't a definite requirement but extra coolers wont hurt

I guess you can always learn more!!! So may consider tuition!:)

Got double decats... hmmm..... a lot of tracks now have a 105db noise limit so i may be ok?

Would it be wise to strip out the back seats if your only ever going to occasionally go to the track (mostly driving on the streets). Wouldn't this make the Supras oversteer more especially on high hp (600hp-800hp), because there is no weight on the back of the car?

tyres are king. get a set of slicks. i hate using my supra on anything but slicks . the grip level increase is huge . evan over "track day" road tyres ....... just so happens i have some rays lightweight race wheels in the for sale section complete with slicks

He doesn't have a cage, so slicks wouldn't be allowed on a track day.

If you think you can live without them, you can take them out - you will get a fair bit more noise in the cabin though. It won't make any obvious difference to the handling.

I would defo get some additional coolers (engine, PS) and a bigger rad. I went for these too before hitting the track.

The UK brakes are fine : Bignum uses these on his beast, and having had the opportunity to go with him on the passenger seat, I have to say I have never been that fast around the Ring :)

Does anyone have any experience with Japspeed radiators? Apparently they give you more cooling... any good? They seem good value for money, or waste of money?

A stock rad in good condition is better than any aftermarket ones I have seen, they use a really dense and efficient core. You will need race pads and fluid if using UK brakes on serious track days. Decent suspension, but if it's good on track it will be simply dire on the road. I can offer stuff that's a good compromise, or full on track set ups. You need a QUIET exhaust, something like the Tanabe Medallion Touring. You needa big oil cooler if staying out for lots of laps, on -12 piping and fittings, or at the VERY VERY least, on -10. Keep wheel and tyre sizes modest, and ride height near stock. Quality tyres make all the difference, you need a specialised road legal track tyre for best value for money and wear. Toyo R888's are the low end, Michelin Pilot Sport Cups, the high end, the difference is startling. Michelins are not handed, so you can even out left to right wear. Tyres that are handed leave you with a pile of dead LH tyres and a pile of part worn RH ones you don't want to mix with new LH ones for the sake of the LSD. A decent LSD transforms the car. The stock one is next to useless, you need minimum TRD, ideally OS Giken. Just depends how far you want to go and what your budget is. You DEFINITELY need a quiet exhaust though.

Have you run Michelin Pilot Sport Cups yet Wez?

Not on a MKIV, have been in other cars with them so not really comparable.

On the MKIV I have only used R888s, GSD3s and 452s on track, once used Khumo Supras on the road and they were shocking but they were cheap.

I'm running these Alex. Awesome track tire with great traction ... the only problem that they only last 1000mls on current setup. They other disadvantage is that they only come with 4.5mm of threat when new, so they are slicks quite fast. :)

I'm really pleased with my Yokohama Advan Neova tyres - been through a maybe a dozen trackdays now, including at least 15 laps of the ring plus the drive there and back, plenty of tread left. Great for BPU cars IMO.

Wow now that is good going!

(Or you're not trying hard enough :D)

Hi,

You say you can offer stuff? What is it that you do? Will look into the tires, a lsd sounds good but expensive? Does this help keep the rear of the car under control?

Any particular make of oil cooler you'd recommend?

Cheers

See my sig, I specialise in race car prep and development but do a lot on Supras, Skylines and other interesting road cars. I offer suspension kits (dampers and springs) for the MKIV from £1280 fitted and set up, and offer brakes, pads, clutches and other stuff. OS Giken is about £1500 supply only. TRD is about £600 from memory. They are very different beasts though. An LSD aids traction. I use all sorts of different makes of coolers, Setrab, Think Automotive, Raceparts, Earls. Most branded ones are pretty similar.

Hi,

Depends on how serious you want to get but the basics you will need are:

Uprated brake pads, I import and sell the Porterfield pads which we use on our race cars http://garagewhifbitz.co.uk/category/whifbitz-cars/

You can see the prices for the the pads here http://whifbitzperformancetuning.co.uk/toyota-supra-supra-brake-parts-brake-pads-c-42_47_76_877.html

Motul RBF660 brake fluid and braided brake lines http://whifbitzperformancetuning.co.uk/toyota-supra-supra-brake-parts-hosesfluid-accessories-c-42_47_76_77.html

Suspension wise, it really does depend on your budget and again how serious you are going to get. I've sold and fitted LOADS of BC Racing coil overs and never had a bad thing said about them, only positive, they offer amazing value for money. At the other end of the scale you have Nitron which we developed with them for the Supra, all can be seen here http://whifbitzperformancetuning.co.uk/toyota-supra-supra-suspension-parts-coil-overs-springs-c-42_47_838_840.html

Titan anti roll bars are highly recommended to, http://whifbitzperformancetuning.co.uk/toyota-supra-supra-suspension-parts-anti-roll-bars-strut-braces-c-42_47_838_839.html

You should also have your suspension arms checked for any play, especially the rear upper arm bushes, these are a common fault now, as the cars are getting older.

Cooling wise, you should definately fit an oil cooler, http://whifbitzperformancetuning.co.uk/toyota-supra-supra-cooling-parts-coolers-power-steering-tanks-c-42_47_473_475.html Something like the 25 row cooler would be a good idea on a BPU car. Stock radiator should be fine as long as its in good condition and not blocked.

Other than that, wheels/tyres, bigger brakes, more power, making the car lighter, decent seats with harnesses, a decent diff unit, aero kit, etc etc.

We can supply and fit all of these parts of course.

Any questions just give me a shout.
