Well my other gearbox lasted around 12 months and when it went it stripped the teeth off the input shaft and laith gear, so i bought 2 W58 box's and fitted 1 as i had a trackday booked at donnington i needed 1 quickly and ended up buying 2 lol.

Anyway fitted the new W58 and did the trackday and had a great time but towards the last session my engine spun a bigend bearing so scrapped the crank.

I had the engine rebuilt and fitted it back in just 3 weeks ago and booked a drift day at oulton park, and again had a greatday and all went well.

But since ive had the engine back its alot more powerful then before so was putting the gearbox under pressure as i was pushing over 400bhp.

So today i fitted my tenabe back on and thought ill give it a quick run to make sure all is well ready for my next trackday on the 26TH This months at oulton lol.

But all was well until i heard a massive crunch and lost all gears accept 4th as its a direct drive.

I was giving it some in 3rd when it went bang so limped home in 4th, so know i have 2 gearbox's with the same stripped gears but lucky i have a spare W58 for my trackday at oulton BUT i doubt it will last long the way i drive it :eyebrows:

So for those people running W58's dont push them to far as they will rip the teeth of the input shaft and the laith shaft, parts costing £600 + from toyota.

Sucks man, does sound like fun though!

Are the R154 really that much stronger as im sure ive read somwhere that they aint that much stronger.

Also would i have to change my clutch and flywheel as im sure again ive read the spline aint they same as W58.

In response to your question, I read this earlier;

mine made 480bhp at .9 bar. 1.3 bar should see over 550bhp. im running at about 1.05 bar now wich im guessing is hovering around the 500bhp mark . the clutch is toast at 350. youl need atleast an r154 at this power level . at 460lbs of torque i blew a w58 to bits so im fitting an r154 box. to do this youl need a 1jz flywheel and a 1jz pull type clutch. the competition stage 4 clutch will hold upto and around 600lbs of torque so ive been lead to believe .

ill be using the competition stage 5 with the 154

If it was me J i'd switch to an R154 no doubt.

Again there hit and miss depending on the life they have led but there alot beefer of a box internally and will take the power your putting out much better than another W58

My box has had a rebuild, consisted of a set of billet shifter forks and the uprated thrust washer. Anyone pushing more than 500 through one should do that really. As for power, more than enough thanks :). Modifications consist of billet flywheel, custom bellhousing, hilux slave cylinder, twin plate carbon fibre plate unsprung clutch.

Its a case of the thrust washer goes brittle with age, I've broke two standard ones now, with a new uprated one, I've yet to break it, and I've tried my best.

The shifter forks are only recommended for people who are ham fisted with the shifter. I snapped the original ones (well one of them), but don't appear to be able to break the billet ones.

Hi there, bad to hear this, 'cause i'm now making my Supra with the W58. And would like to have around 550BHP. But what if i can make it dog box (straight cut)? We can also make it from the R154 or the W58, any ratio you would like. I think i will do it with my 2nd W58.

Well i have a spare W58 that i will be fitting tomorrow to get me on the trackday ive booked then ill look at either getting some internal parts made for the W58 alot stronger then stock as i have some contacts i might pull a favour in with.

Or go for the V160 - V161 box but will get this trackday out the way first.

Shame toyota never made the w58 a little stronger as i love the ratio with my 1JZ.

I know that the price is higher then the v160/161, but this price is for all new internals, with OEM toyota bearings. And you can shift without using the clutch, wich is much faster than the v160/161. We can keep the stock ratio if you wan't or we can make any kind you wan't. And if you use it on trackdays i think that will be a perfect choice. And we can make it from your broken box.

Yes but also bare in mind you then have the cost of getting the box rebuilt which is easy 1k+ unless your feeling brave enough to do it yourself. I've rebuilt a knackered v160 before now and it was nothing short of a headache and a real test of my abilities. Even with the manual right next to me I would of much preferred to send it to my local gearbox specialist as I suspect he would of done it in half the time.

i cosider myself hany with a spanner but whan i striped an old w58 there was no way id ever get it back together. if you like the ratios and feel of the w58 then a 154 is verry simlar in both. thtats why ive decided to buy 2 r154s instead of going for the v160 . i think the 5 speed ratios with a01 diff are better on a track car than the v160 ratios . personal opinion ofcorse and another thing i dont like about the 6 speeds is the lack of feel when you change at speed the 154 really feels like it has bolt action formidable clunk into gear , the v boxes dont so much
