UK head lamps

I have first refusal on a set of second hand UK lamps no bulbs though. Please can any of the UK owners tell me which bulbs I'll need for main and dipped beam. I presume the sides will be the same?

It's been a while since I changed mine over, but the bulbs are 9005 and 9006. Can't remember which ones are which though.

I don't remember having any issues with sidelights.

As Matt said, bulbs are 9005 and 9006. Sidelight bulbs are the same as the J-spec ones.

For guidance, they are £127 +VAT new from Toyota

I've got blue 55w bulbs in the Dipped and 100w blues in the Main beam (For Off Road Use Only)

I'm sure he means £30 for the set.

 

Phil, try to borrow some standard ones first. The UK beam pattern is far superior to that of the crappy JDM lights.

I tried some uprated bluey bulbs in my UK lights and in honesty, I found the standard ones to be better.

I got some Phillips Premium 9006 for my 97 my facelift lights-dipped beam and they don't fit

 

The "O" ring on the boss should provide a snug fit, but was about 2mm too big.

 

The photo shows a 9006 bulb (not the actual one)

I had to remove the "O" ring and reduce the diameter of the boss, I refitted the "O" ring even though I had removed the groove that it used to sit in.

 

They fit okay but they definately aren't designed to fit the facelift dipped beam.

 

Next time I need some bulbs for the healights I'm going to go to Halfrauds and measure some first to make sure they fit!

Yes, the bulbs for J-Spec lights are different to the UK ones.

A hot knife sorts that out no problems just gotta trim the lugs so the oversized one isnt oversized anymore. I even went as far as putting the 65 watt phillips blue in both main and dipped as my lenses are so shabby. You have to take a hot knife to the plug point slots as well to manage this.

Yeah, that's the secret, use 9005 in both main and dip and trim the lugs and socket a bit.

Obviously I am talking modification of the 9005 and 9006's to fit a J-Spec car. The UK bulb holders take the 9005 and 9006 without modifications. The same principles apply to the 9005's though you can modify them by cutting out the socket alignment slots so you can stick a 65 watt 9005 into the dipped beam.

I've got facelift headlights and just checked them, if you open the bonnet and look on the black plastic part above where the bulbs are located there are bulb codes moulded into the plastic. On the top the writing says 'Japan 12V 55W', 'USA HB4 12V', and then slightly lower down near the bulbs is marked '9006J' '9005J'

 

So the facelift low beam code is 9006J and the high beam is 9005J.

 

If someone could check a UK-spec and a pre-facelift j-spec hopefully they also have the bulb code marked on and we can get a definitive answer to what bulb fits which headlamp.

 

Has anybody tried fitting a j-spec bulb (with the smaller diameter body and locking tabs) in a UK-spec headlamp, do they fit?

Found this site that shows diagrams/photos of the 9005J/9006J and the 9005/9006 bulbs and sizes of the locking tabs.

 

So it would appear:

UK-spec headlight bulb code is 9005/9006

J-Spec headlight bulb code is 9005J/9006J

Mine says the same thing J-spec N/A 93 plate. 9005's definitely fit in both with a little lug modification.

So it seems both J-spec facelift and pre-facelift headlights are 9005J/9006J

 

We just need someone to check the UK headlights to confirm that they are definitely 9005/9006 (HB3/HB4 US bulb code.)

 

It would also be good to establish if the smaller 9005J/9006J will fit the UK headlamps.

Save me buying bulbs I don't need.

At a guess I would say its just a case of trimming some lugs. One thing though, you will probably find that your j-spec bulbs are 55w and there are very much better 65w phillips definitely do them available that go straight in a UK so it might be worth investing in a set and keeping the j-spec bulbs as backups.

I have just bought and had fitted my uk lights as mine where j-spec and they are very dull i bought both my lights and a set of philips blue vision bulbs from envy. they are very bright and fit fine.
