Blue Smoke!

Seems that the white smoke I thought I was getting out my car isn’t actually white!

Now the problem is starting to happen more frequently and for longer periods I have (and others have) come to the conclusion that its blue smoke out my exhaust (Very smelly blue smoke!).

It doesn’t make a difference if the engine is hot or cold to be honest. It mainly happens on idle thought! Get clouds of the stuff!

I’ve had a mate follow me and when second turbo comes online there is a haze of smoke and then on the gear change there is a considerable puff of smoke. After about 3 WOT pulls this clears and there is only the haze of smoke from the 2nd turbo coming in.

Turbo seals?
Rings? (I’ve had a brand new short block so would doubt it)
Valve stem seals? (I thought this only caused problems on start-up mainly)

Or head gasket? (The oil and water are both fine and as far as I can see they are not mixing)
BUT
My rad cap was knackered and caused a vacuum in the water system a while back. I imagine the engine slightly overheated. This is when the problems started!

Symptoms sound the same as I had when the turbo oil seals went :(

It drives me mad as it just always goes wrong!

How can i be sure that its the turbo seals? Is there a process of elimination to come to this conclusion?

Its annoying as these turbo’s were recon jobbies from Universal Turbo’s! covered less than 7k and it seems there knackered! There was build up of oil in the intercooler pipes after about 3k!
Out of the warranty now too i might add!

Any other input on this would be much appreciated. I need to make sure what the problem is. Don’t want to order a set of hybrids to find that its not the cure!

Chris Wilson gave me the advice of increasing exhaust backpressure - if the smoking stops after this then it's very likely to be oil seals.

Putting a baffle in or as CW advised a coathanger with a load of metal pan scrubs threaded on to bung the exhaust up a little.

take a boost pipe off and check it for excess oil, there should only be a slight film of oil in the pipes, it shouldnt run out.

Pulled the top intercooler pipe off today. Only a slight reside of oil in there. Looks normal!
Didnt pour out of it or anything!

Could it still be the turbo seals? I,e leaking oil straight into the exhaust or is that not possible?
