noob question, what is safc or piggy back

An SAFC or piggyback is an ECU which interrupts signals to/from the stock supra ECU. In basic terms they can be used to adjust the fueling/timing of the stock ECU (as well as a few other things), for instance if you wanted to fit bigger injectors.

It's a bit of a sledgehammer approach to tweaking the stock ECU, not ideal, but they do work if used carefully. SAFC's are VERY basic versions of a piggyback.

Apex-i had the SAFC = Super Air Flow Converter and HKS had the S-AFR before the days of the Greddy's E-Manage/EMU or the MAP ECU etc....which, are all fuel computers that "piggyback" onto the Toyota ECU, as Homer states above.

The stock ECU can not be re-mapped, you normally buy a piggyback ECU or remove the Toyota ECU and go for a fully standalone ECU (HKS F-con, MoTec and the like).

Okay well maybe you guys can recommend the best option.

I am trying to go full BPU.

Right now I have 3.5" Blitz NUR spec

full blitz intercooler with 3" piping, HKS SSQV attached.

Twin intake

I am equipted with all the gauges.

Blitz turbo timer

Next I will be installing a 3" downpipe, running full de-cat. I do not have a boost controller. I plan to run 16psi.

Should I just get a APEXi SAFC ?

Ok I have read the BPU but still am not understanding something.

I can just attached the 3" downpipe, 3" midpipe, etc... and don't even need to touch my ECU or get it tunned?

Correct, i believe the supra runs a little rich from stock anyway so it's fine at bpu.

If you keep the boost at 1.2 bar it should be fine.

My supra had a piggyback before I went bpu. After I had gone bpu it ran really bad as it needed adjusting to suit the changes. I took it off and sold it on ebay for £275ish to fund more items. Car ran perfect, as it should after.

You just need the items listed in the BPU faq. The stock ECU does not need to be remapped when you turn the boost up to 1.2bar, you just need to make sure you have everything "needed" to go BPU, and preferably some of the sugested items ie FMIC/uprated or new OEM SMIC for cooling.
