Supras in five years time

Hello everyone!

Just pondering the future of the Mkiv Supra over the coming years. How many of you do you think will still own your supra in five or so years time? What do you think will happen to the value of them? Will it continue to slowly drop, will prices level out or will they achieve "cult" or classic status and therefore maybe even increase in value? Or will they go the same way as the Mkiii and just fade away?

Do you think there will still be parts available for them in five years time? I know that Supras have been well used in the aftermarket world and lots of components such as body panels, brake and suspension components can be upgraded instead of sourcing original Toyota parts. But what about things like glass panels such as windows and windscreens? Is there a big store of these that will eventually run out or can they be made on demand?

What about people who repair and work on these cars? Will there still be people who are well familiar with the working of the Supra in five years time or will we all be going to one or two specialists for all our work?

Ultimately, I'm just wondering if you guys think that buying a Supra to keep for five - eight years is a worthwhile investment or will they become to expensive to maintain as parts supplies start to dry up?

Sorry for all the questions!

Opinions / comments wanted!

Cheers, Lambo

Manufacturers make very little profit on the initial sale of a car, most of the money is made through servicing and parts. Personally I don't think they'll be any problems getting hold of parts in the future.

I can see the Supra going the same way as the Cosworths. Now they're becoming cheap a lot will be bought, thrashed, abused and crashed leaving only a very good examples left on the road. They may be cheap to buy now but they still cost a fair bit to run. Prices *will* drop but if you have a good well maintained clean example then you're still be able to get reasonable money for it.

It's certainly not a car to invest it, but one to drive and enjoy.

I think thanks to us all the Supra will reach a cult status. Thankfully design wise the Supra was well ahead of it's time.

Looking at all the money and time that people have invested in their Supras on here alone, surely there will still be plenty around in the years to come. And that puts a smile on my face.:)

Me to.

I didn't buy the car because of what it will do in 5 years, or because it will hold it's value. I just got the car because it looks great, goes like stink, and is fun to drive.

Why bother worrying about what might be?

agreed, there some valid queries about part availablility, servicing etc and it barely touches on the status/value thing?

i agreed with Nick, parts should be widely available, 'specialist' servicing is quite rare/niche at the moment and is likely to stay about the same i'd say...........

Yep I thought it was an interesting thread looking at the future of the car.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Aerotop Dave: Even though I don't own a Supra at the moment, I too occasionally get a bit bored with lots of people asking how much Supras are worth (hence why I did'nt ask that question.....). I was actually wondering how the lack of supply from Japan and specialist / enthusiast market demands will affect the future of the car! Sorry if this wasn't clear! :)

Tim Wildman: If you bought your car just for enjoyment than fair enough, thanks for your comment! :) However, as this will be the biggest single purchase I have ever made in my life (and will probably be for a long time until me and the misses can afford to get a house together), I was just curious as to whether or not it was a good idea or not to invest my savings into a car that in a few years time could potentially be massively expensive to keep on the road and could only be properly worked on by a few people. If you as owners think this may be the case then perhaps I should look elsewhere for my dream car.

Thanks again for your comments guys!

Mark

P.S. I only asked these questions because the search engine on here and on supraforums did'nt really contain the sort of information I was after, sorry if this upset anyone!

The key word there seems to be 'value'...?

Agreed, there were other areas covered though.

yeah, i think i will still own mine in 5 yrs. i do as much work myself as i can on mine, and im sure chris wilson will b around for a few more years to come. i dont see any signs of parts drying up nor have any problems getting parts. i think the price will drop slowly and that there will always b some kind of cult following. prices will not go up, at least not for a very long time.

its good to see u considering yr buy carefully, but if i was wanting to start saving to buy houses i wouldnt buy a supra. its not something to run on a budget, but then again as dude once said "u can sleep in a car but u cant race a house".

Nice to meet you at the w/e BTW Roy, we waited about for a little while for that cuppa but you were still fly-tipping innocent peoples cars whilst they enjoyed the event :p

I was shocked, I came back to my car and started driving. I thought "hold on, I can't see anything".....Bloody adverts all over my windscreen lol.

Back to the thread....I will have won the lottery and will be polishing my ferrarri 9000 laughing at all the poor folk still driving measeley 3litre cars. Then not laughing so hard when I look at my own fuel bill!

Hiya Lambo...I think considering some Supras are as old as 93 on here...(thats eleven years old), in Five years time mine will only be 9 years old, also bare in mind a lot of the people on here use em for weekends only....

However...styling wise not sure if they will fit in five years time.

The words sensible and Supra should not be used in the same sentance...dont buy one if you like the colour of money, because the running costs are not cheap compared to a normal car, but compare it to most similiar powered sports cars and it starts making sence again.

As someone once said, "You want to make God laugh? Tell him your plans for the future".

Who knows what will happen in 5 years time? At the moment, I love the car and couldnt see me without it but circumstances, needs and opinions change rapidly.

I would concur with some of the other guys though. If you are worried about the falling value, cost of ownership and other monetary matters, then maybe the money gobbling beast is not for you?

Right well mines a 93 car I have had it for 3 years. I desperately want a TT but don't want to part with my current motor. So I am when I get the engine to go with the rest of the kit doing a transplant. We use our's every day she drives it to work everyday and I beast it around in the evenings and weekends.

To answer your question it all depends on a few factors. Will you keep it? Well that depends on if you like the car when you have it or not really. I love mine with a passion. Will the values remain acceptable? Well that really depends on how many more get imported and if the star of the next too fast too furious film is a supra or not.

Spares, well I reckon that if toyota dont make them any more there will be enough expertise and aftermarket spares manufacturers to go around plus unfortunately the regular supply of bits from crashed motors.

I can't see any reason for me ever getting rid of the Supra right now. Even if the unthinkable happens (wife kids mortgage) then I'd like to think I'd work my life around keeping it - maybe not driving it as much but it would still be there. I can't think of any car I'd like to replace it.

However, who knows what the future holds? Enjoy it while you can - it's not transportation, it's a part of what makes you you :)
