Hi all

I've seen a cheap v160 for sale, apparently just wining noise coming from it otherwise selecting gears ok

Any idea what the worst case scenario could be? Any estimates for repair or complete rebuild anyone?

Thanks in advance :)

Getrag gearbox internal bits are very costly, and you need a lot of special tools to safely dismantle and rebuild them. I do the odd manual road car box for myself, but it's only when a good used one is hard to find, and the car is worth it. Race boxes are just so much better and easier to work on I try to avoid synchromesh boxes where possible. Here's a link to a pdf showing the disassembly and rebuild for a five speed Nissan box, which is very similar to the 5 speed Toyota one, and both are a lot simpler and easier to work on than the six speed Getrags. Note the number of special tools, and the sheer number of components that can and do wear. http://www.chriswilson.tv/manualtransmission.pdf
