exhaust bung will blow my head gasket

It will increase back pressure and raise EGT's, so they are a very bad way to add silencing. It's unlikely to raise egt's enough to be an issue unless you go on track. If the exhaust is too noisy it's FAR FAR better to fit more or better silencers than fit a bung in the end of it.

:yeahthat:

I think they are designed to keep the noise levels civilised for normal, pottering about, driving. For example when getting up for work and not wanting to annoy the neighbours. If wanting to open up the taps there should be as little restriction as possible. I'm pretty sure the EGTs would go through the roof if caning it with a bung in.

It would be interesting to know just how restrictive the std system is, or some aftermarket systems are in comparison to a free flow system with a bung?

Most std exhaust systems use a labyrinth rather than absorption silencers, which must put quite a restriction in flow? so i wonder just what the comparison would be, most bungs i have used have, had around a 2" opening anyway

On a j-spec with a 3" downpipe/decat with a stock exhaust I saw the boost go up by around 2 PSI just by changing to a blitz with the bung in. The stock system is pretty restrictive so must create more back pressure than a blitz with a bung.

Thats a TT though, we are talking N/A here, i lost nearly 30 BHP on my TT when i had a bung fitted to my old Ziggen system, 3" bore and just absorption silencers, and the bung was 2"! but has a big influence on boost, just a restrictor ring in the wrong place LOL!
