I just bought Shakira's CD - 'Laundry Service'.

I've been waiting for 'bloke-at-work' to get me a 'copy', but, he
hasn't found anyone with one ? ! ?:conf:

When I went to look in HMV, it's one of the new SONY (?) CD's
which "will not play on PC/MAC".
As I wanted it anyway I bought it thinking 'It probably WILL play
on the PC - why wouldn't it ?".;)

NO... IT WON'T....

The PC reads it as an Audio CD but reads 9 .cda instead of 13,
and they don't play as 'tracks' anyhow...

BUT, after a few presses/bangs/ins/outs it finally started playing
using a shareware mp3/wav player ! ! !:eek:

WHILE it was playing I then started my mp3 program (which had also read
it as 9 tracks before !) - this time it saw all 13 tracks
so I QUICKLY ripped the tracks as mp3's.:)

The only defect is track 13 (last track) which is 6:18 long - the music
part is only ~3mins long then you get a loud 'white noise'.
I'm just going to try converting '13' to a wav to 'cut' the bad part
off then re-convert back.....:sly:

Let you know how it goes....

PS. This is only to produce my OWN copy of the disc - I don't like
keeping £100-£150 CD's in the car - ~£5 worth is less to get stolen ! !:music:

Sony are basically breaking the law by producing these CDs, but the problem is, the RIAA are so flippin' powerful over in Corporate America, the punter will continue to get screwed.

I think any company that thinks they can outdo the hackers are as sad as their corperate ethics. Bunch of lamers, the only people they're hurting is their punters. Stopping the pirates, simply isn't possible that way.

Anyone wants a proper prog to rip this 'un-copyable' CD's may I suggest google... For personal use of course...

Just finished 'halving' the 13th track..:sly:

Re-converted...:music:

Burnt....

Played....:)

Indistinguishable from original (except it NOW "plays in PC's")

Can't say if another will copy as easy (or. easier )? !

[ I guess the 'white-noise' part of the last track is the Anti-PC bit ?
If they're ALL like that - only need a program that recognises that
and takes it 'out' as its ripping ? ? ]

Steve.

ps. It did seem from looking along the HMV shelves that SONY are
the only ones (that I saw) doing the 'Won't Play' bit. ? ?

saw one with the same protection system the other day with the additional note that it was an enhanced CD and to get at the extra data you need to put it in a PC !!!

I thought philips told everyone that if they alter the disks in this way they are no longer allowed to call them compact discs.

If you want to play them just chuck them in a pc with linux and burn it using cd-roast, shouldn`t be a problem :D

For personal backup of course........
