Can anyone recommend tyres please?

Hi Guys

I picked up my Supra yesterday (UK twin turbo) and it looks like it needs 4 new tyres.

Can anyone recommend which ones would be best to have, for both wet and dry surfaces.

So far, from looking elsewhere, the popular choice seems to be Toyo Proxy T1s. but I'd heard they were really soft and didn't last very long.

I'm going to need 235/45/17Z for the front and 255/40/17Z for the back. Might sound daft, but would I be best off with the same brand all round, or are some tyres better suited for the front and some for the rear?

The Goodyear F1 GSD3 (or GDS3) seem to be the most popular. Good dry traction, great wet traction and fairly hard wearing.

If I was you I would also book it in for a full laser alignment check as you don't want to put new tyres on and then have them ruined by poor suspension geometrey.

Synn, Alex's tyre choice is one i can thoroughly recommend and they are only just over £100 a corner and will outlast/wear better than the Toyo's.

If the car is on standard uk 17" alloys and you've no reason to suspect they have not been recently put on, then i'd expect the effect of any poor suspension geometry would be shown in these nearly worn out tyres. If these are worn evenly across the tread, then for me this would be good enough to put on the new tyres with a more minor, tracking etc alignment.

You can then just keep an eye on the wear of them with time......

I found the F1’s, mentioned above, on the fronts with Bridgestone SO2’s or SO3’s ( both popular here) at the rear, a very good combination. The F1’s have such excellent water clearing characteristics that they improved the grip available at the rear for both of the above in the wet, on my car. As for comparison of the dry gip levels of F1’s and SO2’s or SO3’s it is hard to compare and they are all good. I now have the F1’s front and rear on my stock 17’s and they give great feel and confidence under hard cornering all year. They are a good value high grip wet and dry, good wearing tyre. For a single tyre for all year use they are certainly hard to beat.

wow hold it there try these ( vredestein ultrac )babys theyve cleaned up in all the sports tyre testing some one said theye were a "brakethrough in tyre technoligy" and there 30% cheaper then a gds-3 theve got better wear,dry grip,wet grip,stability and there not as noisy. im ordering some soon.http://www.reifentest.com/cgi-bin/autotest.pl?103z119z110&&&EN

they were tested in one of the car mags "auto express" i think they came first in testing one of the p-zeros were second and the eagle f1 was 3rd these were all to a budget of about £160 for a 225/40/18 wich i think was retail cus the prices semmed a bit over the top but the utrac was £30 cheaper than the f1 and better at everything.

The Eagle F1's were rated top by Evo magazine for all round performance, if thats not enough recommendation for you.. well I dont know what is :)

ive always put f1s on all my cars they are a very good tyre but how will you know if somthings not better until you try it. going bye tests they are better.

i saw the evo tyre test a couple of months ago but the ultrac has only been out a few weeks.

you are right, we won't know until we try it, however if someone comes on here and ask's for a recommendation i will give them one based on my personal experience and not what i've heard / think will be good.

this is not to say those you mention are not better, but i have no way of knowing this and at this point in time the F1's are good enough for me to not even really consider other brands.........

You can only recommend what you've used but new tyres are coming out all the time like the Khumho MX tyres.

Personally I don't get an album wihout hearing an likeing at least 3 tracks. Similarly, I would need a few independant tyre tests to convince me of a new tyre's merit's. The Khumho MX and the Ultrac need more investigation IMO.

i know the eagle f1 is a top tyre and would recomend it to any one but when you see diffrent tests all saying this new tyre is better its not going to be worse is it.. im going to try a set shortly so watch this space ill give my opinions on it..

Bought a set of the F1's for a really good price and had them fitted at home.

Me too! Def no complaints, and also I think you'll find Goodyear are struggling to keep up with demand, gotta be pretty good when you can't make enough of them!

Eagle F1's here as well but have to say the Bridgestones previously mentioned were a bit more grippy in the dry on my 16's

Had the older, GSD2's? and now have a full set of 3's.

ive put a pair of vierdastein ultracs on the back and theye are actualy very good, far better than uniroyal rainsports, they grip good are good in the wet the down side is theye are a bit squeky when pushed hard, but feel alot more stable at speed than f1s and have less road noise.
