Single Shopping list - I need your input

Ok so I am planning on installing a single at some point in the next year or so. I don't have wads of cash to throw at my car as it is really only my toy/hobby so I will be doing it in bits as/when I have money and good offers come up. I'm looking to use this thread as a shopping list and eventually a check sheet to make sure I have everything. Exact turbo choice etc isn't set in stone, the only thing I know is that I am not building the engine and I do not plan on lifting the head. Power output will be 700hp MAX.

 

I currently have:

 

FMIC

Boost Gauge

AFR Gauge

EGT Gauge

Fresh Oil Pump

Fresh Water Pump

Fresh Front Crank Seal

RSR GTII Exhaust system

Walbro Fuel Pump

HKS SSQV 2 - Will need 2 of these or a bigger one IIRC

 

 

So.... What do I need?

 

Turbo

Manifold

Downpipe

Oil feed/return lines

water feed/return lines (are water cooled turbo's old hat?)

Gaskets, nuts/bolts, bits & bobs

FPR

Clutch

Rear Crank Seal

Cam Seals

Stem seals

Bosch fuel pump

Filter if current ARC one is no use.

Custom IC Piping

BOV flange

SRD Cams

Springs & Retainers (7200RPM rev limit)

Injectors 800cc Min, High Impedance

stand alone ECU (Planning Solaris/Ryan map)

spark plugs & general service items (All fluids)

Coating (For manifold, hot side and DP)

Oil Pressure/temp gauge (hopefully in 1)

Boost solenoid for Solaris

Wastegate

Oil Cooler

Fitting

Mapping

Possible Rad dependant on condition.

 

 

I'm guessing the stock intake manifold will be OK for what I want? What about the fuel rail?

True 700bhp is a lot of power.

 

Id not advise buying bits from all over the place, buy a complete turbo kit that you know will be a simple bolt on.

 

Stock fuel rail may do 700bhp but i would go twin feed rail and you will also need a FPR, 800cc injectors are going to be close to max duty cycle at 700bhp which is not good, never go over 80% imo.

 

Stock intake manifold will be fine.

 

I would go 4" downpipe and system for that power.

 

what clutch do you plan on using? single plate wont be up to the job.

700 is just the maximum I will be aiming for, I'm happy anywhere leading up to that sort of figure.

 

I would really like a kit to come up for the right price but I didn't think I would really go wrong with a Whifbitz manifold or an HKS one. Aiming for a 6765 turbo, or one of similar size. If I had started saving earlier I would have had that fuel system off you in a heartbeat. I'm going to do this off my overtime though and don't want to cheat lol. I thought 800s might be pushing it a little bit. I will definitely be going with a 4" downpipe, if I can get a 4" system for a reasonable price then I will. Is there not an FPR cheat that Lee does? As for the clutch it will just be whatever is recommended to me at the time. A close to stock feel would be nice.

 

So thats nearly double the output of a Ferrari 360 with its v8 engine ,on a 15 year old engine , without even looking inside ,and on a limited budget - there may be a flaw in your plan Baldrick!!

 

I'm not really worried about that to be honest. The engine will get a proper health check, well as much as possible without cracking it open. Other members seem to be managing it ok. Going by the last few months a built engine is more likely to fail than an unbuilt one.

 

I don't really have a limit to the money I want to spend, I just want to spend my money wisely and not just blow out wads of cash at things I don't need. As I said, its my toy. If it all goes horribly wrong then on my own head be it.

Just out of interest how much is your budget for this project? I'm looking at doing something similar to this next year. I'm currently running bpu manual and looking at about 10k

 

As I say, I don't really have one but 10k is normally the figure banded about. Me wanting the solaris might stretch that a bit.

What sort of budget do you have? It's an expensive business to do a proper reliable conversion and not worth doing on the cheap.

 

I'd not get sucked into the theory of more hp is better, 700hp is a lot on a stock engine, even one that has been opened up and refreshed. For a daily driver I would aim for around 550-600hp ie. T61/GT35R or T67/T04Z size of turbo, fast spool and bags of power.

All the above plus IC pipe, wastegate, screamer pipe/recirc pipe, intake pipe/filter, mid pipe and all the various fittings, gaskets, etc. should be included in a turbo kit

Filter if current ARC one is no use.

264/264 cams

Injectors 800cc Min, High Impedance

stand alone ECU (Planning Solaris/Ryan map)

Electronic Boost Controller

RLTC (Possibly, although with a solaris I will go with the optional TC)

Blow off valve/weld on boss.

Turbo blanket

 

There'll be lots of other bits and pieces needed: gaskets, shims, bearings, fittings, etc. Leave those up to the tuner who's doing the fitting.

You won't need an EBC with the Solaris/Syvecs, just budget for the Boost Solenoid.

No need for the RLTC - the Syvecs has it free, not optional.

 

Spend the money you'd save on the above two by having your cams done and head examined.

 

Fuel wise - Jamesy is running 740bhp on his car with adjustable FPR, and on a Bosch 044 on a stock rail with 800's

Cheers Nic, I just remembered the WG myself and added it lol. Loads of good input as usual. I definitely don't plan on doing it on the cheap. My budget and power goal can change as per my requirements at any time. Nothing is set in stone, if it costs £10k then great, if it's £20k then so be it. Although if it IS £20k it may take longer lol.

 

A kit will definitely be up there at the top of my list. I would hope to pick up a 2nd hand kit like the one JP sold or something like that. Even if I could get a kit with a seperate turbo that would be fine.

Your brakes and tyres may want looking at too :)

 

 

I have UK's with CW pads so they should be up to the job for my driving style. The tyres will definitely need looking at, as will the wheels as they are only 10" at the rear. That will be further down the line though.

Brakes will be fine.

10" rears with some 285's will be fine with the Syvecs TC and also maybe some gear dependant boost?

Ideal, I was even looking at 295s. The only trouble is they are 19s so I won't be able to get 888s. I'm sure I'll find something though :)

Numbers get chucked about on this forum without a thought i sometimes think, This is not a dig at you Scott, everyone does it myself included, as i said above 700bhp is a hell of a lot of power, i like pushing things but i am fully aware of the risks and accept them, if i really wanted it to last id not push a stock engine that far.

 

I only ran my stock engine at that power for a very short while and it didnt like it, at the first thunder road i did the engine became noisy and when stripped down it had scoring on the bores and a possible head problem, that was only after a few thousand miles at 730bhp.

 

Going big power is superb, i love every second of it, a 900bhp supra is a world apart from a 600bhp supra, but its a BIG money game.

Exciting times!!! I think the whifbitz twin wastegate setup is what is at the top of it's games at the minute,

Also get a compression and leakdown test done mate, just to check your motor is sweet!!

 

As Jamie said,700hp is alot, I went in jamesy's a few weeks back, it wasn't at high boost but my god, it's a handful alrite,

I know what you mean mate and I fully understand what you are saying. I won't be pushing the car anywhere near as hard as you did though and I have only done around 5k miles in 3 years of ownership so my mileage is VERY low. I know a lot of people will see me having this sort of power as a complete waste, and they would be right, but I want it. Having 400ish HP is a complete waste for me given the way I drive my car. As an example I have never seen less than 250 miles for a tank so that shows how little I push the car. The 700hp would probably only be getting used on the odd burst. The rest of the time I would be at mid-high RPM at most.

 

It's really hard to explain :)

Will see, I certainly won't take anything for granted. A lot will depend on what Lee thinks of the engine to begin with.

 

In the grand scale of things blocks are fairly cheap though :D

Plentiful and much cheaper than a built engine. I would consider having a built engine, but it would only be done by an specialist engineer, not a garage. IMO a properly built engine can not realistically be assembled at home by a relative amateur, due to the equiptment and experience required. I'd rather go with an unopened stock engine than go to someone I haven't got 100% confidence in. It's a fecking expensive investment to go bang :D
