A leak-down tester consists of two gauges linked in such a way as to feed a constant pressure to a cylinder, and monitor to lost pressure differential, which gives a pretty good indication of the state of the cylinder/ring seal and the valve/seat seal.

Far better than just a compression test, as it gives a constant loss figure, rather than a accumulation of cylinder pumping capability.

Oh! and its not too hard to make one if you have a couple of decent gauges lying around;)

Quite a few of us will have compression testers but leak down testers might be harder to get your mits on.

Is the car dead? Would taking it to a local garage not be an option?

ive got a compression tester but it doesn't tell you the cause of the problem it just shows that there is a problem:search:
