So is there anything else you need to fit at the same time ?

Have a good read of the linked thread.

Before going ahead check the condition of the intercooler, if old with missing/crumbling fins, add a new one to the list below.

List of parts you will need:

Cat Back Exhaust

1st Decat Pipe

2nd Decat Pipe

Restrictor Ring

Walbro Fuel Pump

Fuel Cut Defender

Boost Gauge

Cooler Grade Spark Plugs

You can buy a package from Whifbitz (Paul Whiffin) who is a trader on this site he can also fit the whole lot for you if wanted.

Parts can be sourced separately as you now know what you need :)

As for fitting, it completely depends on how competent you are with your engine, I personally got it all done for me, but that is up to you

What does a BPU kit actually do ? Does it just allow the boost to be uprated ? Does it do anything else ?

...also worth considering (if you haven't already), is that if you declare the mods to your insurance company - and you should, obviously - then they may not want to insure you; or, if they are happy to continue insuring you, then they will probably ask for an additional premium - which may be quite a lot.

If you car is currently standard, then I'd advise that you check out the insurance side first...

Is there a standard BPU kit or do you have to source the different parts yourself ?

There are packages you can buy, personally I would pick and choose the parts I wanted.

Is it a specialist operation to have it fitted ?

Not really specialist work any capable mechanic could fit the decat pipes, restrictor ring and exhaust. The spark plugs are easy to fit. The fuel pump, FCD and boost gauge all need wiring in, not difficult to do, but I would use a competent auto electrician if you are not confident enough to do it yourself.

None of it is difficult, there will be countless threads about every aspect. Most probably cheaper to source bits yourself, decat pipe and exhaust systems come up for sale quite frequently. Just a word of caution. You might be sold a restrictor ring as having a boost limit, ie 1.1bar, this is rubbish, as every car is different and what may hold one system to 1.1 bar in one car might be 1.0 in another or 1.2+ and over boost in another. Bet to get a smaller ring and gradually increase the diameter of the restriction to what you want.
