Waterfall noise behind dash

Hi, have noticed recently what sounds like running water behind the dash, more like a river actually :) Can generally be heard when first starting the car or sometimes after hard acceleration, sometimes not at all. But last 3 times the car was used i heard it a few times on the journey.

 

Is it trapped air in the coolant system? Does it need a complete flush?

When the rad cap is removed, should there be coolant flush up to the top?

 

I noticed when i got the car back from a non supra specialist garage a short while back, he said your coolant is a bit low, ive topped it up. When i checked, i looked at the expansion bottle in the far right hand corner of the bay and it was about an inch and a half past the full mark. This is just an expansion bottle isnt it? There always used to just be a small amount over the low marker in there.

That's the two pipes that come through the bulkhead, roughly 22mm in diameter? I had one of them blow apart when my head gasket went, and now that I think about it, that was the last time I think I had proper heating.

 

Pistonbroke - do they leak whilst hot or cold or both?

 

You'll see a pink residue buildup if they're leaking.

The level in the expansion tank will vary depending on conditions. The level will be higher when the car has had a good run, but it should be at the max marker when cold.

When the car is cold fill the rad to the brim and fill the expansion bottle (infront of the rad) to the full/max marker.

Air in the system.

 

Run the car up with the heater on full hot and the rad cap off which will allow air out of the system, raise the revs a little (2000rpm) to help clear the air out the system. Top up till the rad is full to the neck.

Top up the exspansion tank to the max level.
