I am stuck by the side of the road with a couple of people on the way at the moment. The car had a loss of power and would barely move, almost like it was on the dregs of petrol yet I only just filled up, feels very lumpy and wont go above.20 its almost like it is stalling but the car is an auto. Any ideas or AA time?

Cheers

Always keep empty Oasis bottle in car for such things.

They have a bigger opening so also good for having a piss on the move.

LOL thats funny... :D and yeah on the oasis. Be a bit bad trying a coke bottle with there little ends haha. Wonder how he is getting on. Still agree with the diesel comments

Well I managed to get home thanks to a few friends, excuse my crap explaining as I was typing out a post on my phone in the dark.

When I say just filled up it was probably 2 or 3 days back, I always keep the car topped up so it was only about £25 or so and I have only given the car a few miles of use since then.

We checked the behaviour of the car again very briefly when they arrived and it would not go above about 1700rpm in first before there was a fuel cut. The only thing I noticed was the passenger side headlight was flickering a bit but checked cables and could not see any shorts or anything, the light was fine after that anyway.

If I take this to a local garage (after running through some checks in daylight) they are going to ream me and cash isnt in abundance at the moment.

Is there any trader in Bristol or anyone who would be able to help me out this Sunday or in the week next week at all? Happy to pay, I have the car I always wanted, I don't want to lose it now:hang::(

I found myself working this weekend so didn't have a lot of time to spend on the Supra. I couldnt see any popped hoses, pipework to the FMIC seemed fine, no coolant problem, oil seemed fine.

With the fuel I did the easiest thing and checked my petrol receipt from a few days earlier so don't think there is any diesel nasties.

My weather sealing strip under the scuttle needs new clips and has been off for a bit so I checked around for possible water damage and couldnt see anything, took the plastic cover bit off the engine and could'nt see anything dodgy.

I started it up on the Sunday and let it run for a while after my fiddling and it seemed fine so I took it out around the block which seemed fine, tried boost and that was fine also (back to its old self). I took it out later that night briefly and it was fine one way but comming back it started to feel lumpy again so looks like a nasty is still there.

One thing I havent checked is the fuel filter? could this indicate a blockage or damaged fuel pump? I am not that technical so any help is much appreciated.

I am tempted to pass it over to a trader to check out but it looks like my only choices are AFR or Whifbitz both of which are not exactly close to Bristol and would require a trailer / flatbed.

Any ideas or suggestions for maintenance work / general check over closer to the Bristol area or is the M25 area my only option?

Cheers

i had a problem just like this a few years back after a spirited drive,

I pulled up to a mates house, went inside for a while, came out and when i went to drive off it almost cut out with no power?

The car on idle was fine as soon as u touched the acc pedal it almost stalled, the car was not in gear either, if u tried to floor it, it only went to about 1700rpm.

AA recovered it to my local speacialists and after a closer inspection it was reading an error code for the crank angle sensor.

So had that changed at the cost of about £600, bloke then tried to test drive my car and as soon as he popped it into drive, same fault again!

Turns out after allot of messing about it was just a clip from the coil pack loom (the one at the back of the block that goes into the turbo pipes) had slightly popped out, clip was clipped back in and sorted straight away.....i was gutted i had just wasted £600 but atleast my car was fixed!

I would defo check all your clips on the coil pack loom buddy and see if this fixes it?

Cheers,

m.

I googled the traders ;), when I bought the car it has quite a bit of aftermarket stuff on it, if I take it to a local backstreet garage I am worried I will get shrugged shoulders off them, dont know if they would have the bits to check fault codes and such.

Who said anything about a back street garage  are there no garages near you that do performance cars.

If your in Bristol speak to Kev O, im sure he could check your fault codes for you and have a quick look at your car. He's near Bristol.

+1 on checking the fault codes yourself, could potentially save you a few quid.

My mate owns a garage up near Bristol airport and he worked on my supra a number of times so he'd probably be more than willing to take a look, he used to enjoy working on my supra more as opposed to the standard hatchbacks he got in most days anyway.

If you want the number for the garage I could PM you it if you'd like?

Cheers Matt that behaviour sounds very familiar to me although presumably you run a manual.

I certainly don't proclaim to know much about cars other than changing tyres, brake disks and general maintenance so always on the lookout for expert advice.

By chance when I had the cover off this weekend I took a pic of the engine (below). Presumably the plastic clips in the middle are what I need to change, I have heard of these before and seen that Whifbitz do them fairly cheaply, do these do anything more than act as a connector for the wires though?

I was searching through old PMs when I was buying the car to look for clues and such and Jim mentioned the point below...

"Had a few misfires since I had it, (common thing). I found that the small coil clips above the spark plugs needed replaced and fiddled with, that solved the problem straight away, (fault code 14). Had to play with one of them recently."

Maybe the clips are loose again, from the pic they may have been cleaned but probably not replaced so might give that a go first if its a cheap enough fix.

SupraTroopa yep I would very much appreciate the number of your mate with the garage if you think it would be his thing.

So everything seems to point to coil packs or connectors at the moment we think? happy to try other bits if people have ideas.

Matt, back to what you said about the wiring look (and without a supra to check on) this loom you mentioned comes out the back of the block (top of my pic) and is just a connector right? maybe some build up of rust or something on the connectors.

Thanks for the help and ideas guys, really appreciate it.

Dave

How about Interpro at Thornbury?

A few horror stories from there if I remember correctly...

I could be mistaken and maybe they have sorted themselves out since all the bad rep?

Prime candidate is right there in that picture. Look at the no.1 coil pack clip (The one nearest the bottom). There are two wires that go into it. The one on the right in that picture looks like it is falling out. (The round bit is the foreign matter ingress protection boot, and should be pushed all the way into the connector)

Two things go wrong with these connectors.

1. The plastic clip gets brittle and disintigrates into a million pieces when you touch it, leaving little bits of plastic littered around your spark plug holes.

2. The metal female pins in the connector, after years of being pushed on and pulled off, end up 'slack' and need closing back up to make sure that they make a good contact to the male pin on the coil pack.

Hope that helps,

Tony

Dave if the cars had history with coil pack connectors i would defo have a look closely.

U will get a fault code on ignition side, cant remember the code of the top of my head, but worth checking first, also if its a crank angle sensor error code this can also read as a fault code for coil packs/bad connection.

The one that appears to be the most commom for your fault is the two connectors which come out from the back of the block (Off The coilpack loom)and into sensors on the turbo side of things.

Check these 2 clips are not perished and reclip them in after a good inspection, after that try to start her up and see what happens?

If nothing then I would check all the coil pack clips and inners to make sure there all ok, u will know straight away if there fooked they normally fall to bits in your hands.

As your taking the coil pack clips out to look I would also quickly whip out your coil packs to check for hair line cracks coming up from the blue rubber seals, another really common fault on old supras, a faulty coil pack will give u similar faults to yours.

Also check the earth strap is tight/connected at the back/right of the block connecting to the bulkhead, these rot out and and become loose, which can also give similar faults!

A little tip Dave as well for coil pack clips is to go to a breakers yard and rob them from almost any Renault (Magana etc)as there the same, or go into a Renault dealership give them the same part no as Toyota for coil pack clips and there 1/5th price and same part no.....makes me sick;)
