Ok, so I'm on the A303 about 100 miles into my 110 mile journey back to camp this weekend, and I notice my steering wheel is slightly sticking and releasing at the end of the left and right turning play.

Then the play tolerence started to increase slighty after a few more stick and release moments. I decide to pull over at the next layby to investigate further except upon approaching the next bumpy bend the steering wheel turns almost 45 degrees and the car goes straight on! [sHOCK][/sHOCK]

Luckily the steering wheel gripped again and I was able to limp around the bend but with the SW now 180 degrees out.

By the time I reach camp the SW rotates freely without turning the wheels

This is what I found:

The hub splines have disintergrated as well as my undies....

Cant see the pics at work but sounds terrifying! Why did you carry on driving and not get recovered?

I was pretty much around the corner from camp by the time it had failed completely and I was just pootling along with hazzards

Steering is over rated anyway.....:D

I found that out too by simply bending the universe around my car using my butt cheeks once the first no steer happened

That is really scary, imagine that was a Spirited Driving session in the country lanes.

I know! I try not to think about it had I been cornering in the outside lane...:(

What hub was it, that's some scary stuff.

Alas it was just a generic Toyota fitment one...lesson learned there. Shelling out the extra bucks on a decent one now.

Pah! in my day it was 3d, half Crown. Dont know youv'e been born these days Hurumph!

Get off my lawn! :D
