What a nightmare week!

Basically I was trying to sell my supra about 3 months ago after owning it for almost 7 years, however had nothing but insults and timewasters (apart from dan) so thought that’s it, I’m never selling her!

I have always looked after my supra and she is my pride and joy, I thought if I’m not going to sell her then I will do a few things to the car that I had planned to do for ages.

So the car had a few new toys fitted including a new apexi boost controller and was running awesome, but I wanted to get it set up properly and mapped at Corten Millers on their dyno (my kinda local specialist) to see what kind of power I was running at the rear wheels.

So I left the car with them on Monday morning for them to do their magic and on Tuesday I get a horror phone call to say there’s been a massive problem with your car whilst it was being dyno’d and its lost all boost!

It turns out my supra decided to spit out the exhaust ceramic on turbo 2 at 1.2bar, as u can guess I’m so gutted, and to make matters even worse it took almost a whole day to strip the turbos out.

Eventually when they were out and after a closer inspection it appears turbo 2 is almost completely shot from the ceramic damage and on top of this the intake fins on turbo one look as though they have been chewing rocks for the last ten years!

The plan was to get my originals recon’ed to hybrids with steel blades and new seals and bearings, but the damage on T2 is that bad I now need a new one or sec hand one and I’m really struggling to find a decent pair quickly!

I now have a supra in bits with no parts and its stuck at the garage, I really need some advice on what to do, should I just get some used tubbies and fit them straight in or get them converted to hybrids first before its all rebuilt again?

If anyone knows anyone who has some j-spec tubbies stock or hybrids lying about please could u let me know, I have cash waiting and need to get my car back on the road ASAP.

Cheers matt

Can feel your pain mate. Mine to has been in and out for repairs in the last week and a half and has had a lot of bits sorted, but £540 last friday and am expecting another good few hundred quid later today when i collect, and left with a car that now doesnt make correct boost but did when it went in. Peed off as you can imagine, especially with pod next week :(

I think you need to find a used set of turbo's to keep you going. I havent ever been down the hybrid route but they seem to be a bit hit and miss.

Really sorry to hear that Matt :(

If you can afford it I'd try going with new turbo's as you can see from recent posts how second hand turbo's can be quite fragile. Though saying that some members are selling some decent 2nd hand turbo's.

The problem has been caused by the dodgy compressor vanes IMO. When they aren't intact the turbo won't run efficiently. This will mean the turbo has to work harder to maintain 1.2bar (as some is leaking), the extra strain on the turbine side might mean that it is working to the equivilant rate of 1.3 onwards depending on the damage. This is what kills the turbine.

Mine spat out the entire turbine wheel at 1.6bar.

It must be horrible giving a car to someone and getting it back in a worse state than when it went in. :(

I'm not sure I would leave my car anywhere to have things like boost adjusted without me being present. There are too many people about that will take advantage and think ' I wonder what we can get out of it if we just tweek it up a tad more?'

Feel for ya.

Thx for the feedback and advise guys,

After much thought ive decided to get new turbos, well new one's built with steel inturns, new bearings and new seals, its costing a small fortune but well worth it i think, ive been told i will be able to boost to 1.4 very safely with the new turbos which will defo give me some power increases, i think if i did just get second hand ones to replace my old ones, i could so easily be in the same possition in a few months/years and even more gutted i didnt do the right thing to start with!

This way at least im gaining something from the work thats being done performance wise for the costs.

I think i should also say the guys at Corten Millers Ben & Tom have been so good with the situation so far and really helped out with labour costs.........they only charged me £160 for a days labour stripping the turbos out etc, at the end of the day its not there fault this has happened and could of charged me the earth for what they have done so far, so thanks guys ;)

I will keep u posted over the next few weeks on how things have gone and what the gains are with the new tubbies in.

cheers again.

In then end your car will be better for the new gear. You won't think about the money in time.....:D

H.

yeah i cant complain over the last 7 years its never had anything major happen, its even gone through its mot every year without fault.

Its defo the best and most relieable car i have ever owned, i guess when u start to mess with them over the years it will take its toll!

ive been told i will be able to boost to 1.4 very safely with the new turbos which will defo give me some power increases

The turbos themselves may cope with 1.4bar, but you'll generate a lot of heat at those sort of levels as the sequential system is quite restrictive, which could potentially trash your engine. If you haven't already I would fit an EGT gauge so you can monitor the exhaust temps and I'd keep the boost down to around 1.2bar.

Hope you get the car all sorted soon.

Who's doing the work on the turbos matey?

Thing to look for before going for a refurb, is make sure the housings aren't cracked. If the housings are damaged, there's no point in spending up to 1k on refurbing them.

I can recommend CR turbos through experience.

Corten Millers are using a company they work closely with called Turbo Dynamics to rebuild my old ceramic j-specs with.

The housings have been checked and are both fine with no hairline cracks, which is probably the only good news I have had this week!

From what I have been told today my new turbos will be far more efficient, powerful and more reliable compared to my old j-spec ceramic ones, they also said they will spool faster even though there steel blades.

1.4 bar is extreme I know and I won’t be boosting that much with my current set up, in fact the normal boost will probably be set up to 1.0 bar.

however knowing that on occasions when I do want to boost to 1.2 bar I now know I’m well within the safe operating limits of my new turbos and that’s got to be good after what’s just happened!

They can give a little more power - up to say 20hp - but the trade off is that they will spool up noticeably slower than the stock ceramic turbos.

The hybrid turbos will flow more air than the stock turbos, so at 1.2bar you will be reaching the limits of the stock fuel system. I would suggest either fitting an AFR gauge or getting the car checked on a dyno so you know how much boost you can safely run.

I have an afr gauge and the car has been dyno'd just before the turbo went, so from the fig I have been told my fueling is really good with no problems there mate, I've been told the new bearings are that much better than the originals and this is why steel inturns can now spool faster than the original ceramic ones, I hope all this is true as I'm spending allot on these conversions!

The stock ceramic turbos are close to maxing out the stock 440cc injectors at 1.2bar, your new turbos will have bigger internals and will flow more air at the same boost, good you have the AFR gauge fitted so you can see how far you can push them.

Generally hybrids spool up slower as the internals are bigger and heavier than the stock ceramic turbines. Let us know how you get on.

Do the turbos come with a warranty? There have been quite a lot of cases where seals have blown prematurely on rebuilt turbos, worth checking before you hand over the dosh.

Yeah the turbos are warrented, but im getting worried about all these negative comments now!

I was ment to 100% confirm today but hav'nt now :(

From what i was told I thought i was doing the right thing, but maybe i should just get a good pair of sec hand tubbies, it sounds allot safer and a cheaper!

So am i correct in saying the j-spec ceramic turbos are much faster at spooling up and give better performance than uk spec turbos with steel internals?

Im being told so many diff things its getting me worried now

Has anyone had any work done by turbo dynamics, am i being lied to about building better turbos than the original ceramic ones?

I dont want to spend loads of money to have a slower car thats not reliable!

Help anyone?
