Refurbed my Blitz 03's

Ever since seeing a Supra with Blitz 03's on years back I promised myself a set one day.

Started looking around about a year ago, looked at other wheels but always ended back wanting the 03's. Well after a failed attempt to get a set from the States due to the cost of import duties I got chatting to Scooter on this forum and he had a set :)

I'm sure he'll agree they had seen better days and needed a good tidy up, he e-mailed me loads of pics before I went to see them so I knew what to expect, top bloke and totally honest about the condition.

I picked them up and then began by stripping them down myself. All four wheels had kerb damage, some fairly bad, one area of concern to me was a shallow dent on one front wheel in the polished area of the rim. I knew that this could be removed by the right person but also knew that it needed a certain amount of skill to prevent the alloy being overworked as this would result in cracks and ruin the wheel :(

I ended up taking it to a specialist panel beating company that does nothing but Historic Racing Car restoration (£££££'s :)). They also welded up the kerbed areas and turned them back to the original profile.

After this I took them to a local split rim refurb company, chose Shadow Chrome powder coating for the centres and they sent the barrels off for polishing to another specialist, he did a cracking job !

When I took them apart I noticed that the chrome was poor on some of the bolts, I got them replaced with stainless ones from Germany (more £££'s). Last but not least I had them fit new angled valve stems as this was the only part untouched.

So, took ages, loads of running around and shed loads of cash but I now have my dream wheels :) Big thanks to Scott for selling them to me and I hope I've done them justice mate;)

Cheers for the comments, yeah I'm chuffed as they look better than new imo.

I still need to get some wheel nuts, thinking now of chromed steel spline ones as I'm not sure I trust the alloy ones and can't afford to hack them off if they get stuck on :D

Also trying to source some centre badges, looking at getting some domed resin ones made in black with silver/mirror Blitz logo.

Very nice fella... mine need doing at some point as they're starting to go.

BTW.. would you like a picture of the center logo off my wheels to use or are getting your own design made up?

Could you PM me a ballpark figure of what I should expect to pay.

Yeah a pic of the centre would be great as I want to copy the Blitz mirror shadow logo part of it and can't find any decent pics online ;)

A breakdown of what I paid:

£200 - to have the dented area removed by pro panel beaters (shouldn't think you'll need this), for that money they also welded up all four rims to remove fairly bad kerbing and also turned them back.

£160 - Powder coat centres in shadow chrome (usually costs a bit more in this colour), also included powder coating the barrels satin black.

£80 - Mirror polishing the alloy dish

£180 - Replace the bolts, about 158 off, with stainless steel, also nuts replaced.

£80 - To rebuild, included bolting together to correct torque, loctite all and also run a new bead of sealant around the welded join of the barrel. (was going to do this myself but had I damaged the powder coat etc. then i'd be stuffed )

£10 - To replace the angled valve stems.

The valve stems were a bargain, the panel beating/welding seemed a bit on the steep side but I paid for their panel beating expertise I guess. The rest of the prices seemed about right tbh.

So, a total of £710 and I've still got to sort the wheel nuts and centres :D

I've got centres like that but in silver, I was thing about the resin type ones on the Z1's but in silver.

My silver ones don't really match the shadow chrome colour now and are slightly tatty so I thought of the attached design? They would have a black background with a silver Blitz logo with mirror shadow to the lower right. The whole lot covered with gloss domed resin.

Some close up pics that Scott took for me before I had them, they show the type of curbing and condition of the polished rim prior to straightening the dent and polishing.

As my calipers will be more visable and could also do with a new paint job I'm wondering if I should stick with the stock black or go something like red. Not sure if anything other than black will go with my Trophy Blue paint though?

Nice. I'm going to be re-furbing my volk gts wheels in the next few weeks. Your result has definitely inspired me!

Once you'd had the barrels polished did you seal them at all? The reason I ask is that the lip on the volks is originally annodized, and where I've had them polished before it completely removed the coating so now they corrode at the speed of light. :(

These originally had a light anodising too, very thin layer and had corroded in places. They took it past the anodising to the bare alloy and polished that, they then used Belgum Alu polish that has a wax in it to protect but I've also topped it up with a layer of Autoglym HD wax.

Got to say that I won't be driving it in the winter or on salted roads and as long as you don't let them go too far they are easy to revive again once down to the alloy. Another option is to get them bright zinc coated, imo though any coating or lacquer 'dulls' the finish, if you can live with the bare alloy then great.

What size spacers are you going to use to make them clear the UK brakes? I think I've decided to keep my 03's on the Supra but need to judge how far they need to come out for when I fit the UK callipers.

??? Not fitted them yet but when I got them off Scott he said he had them fitted over UK's without spacers as they are the correct offset.

I think Blitz did two types of offset in these, I'm hoping mine are the UK brake freindly version :)
