Spacers

I have done a search and read numerous threads all with different opinions on spacers but they all seem to be regarding ones at least 10mm. I am only looking at getting some 5mm ones all round to make the wheels fit a bit more flush with the arch but wanted to check if doing so would be safe?

Cheers

The wheels should be supported and centralised by the hub spigot, the lip at the center of the hub (see pic below). If you fit 5mm spacers the whole of the weight of the car will be supported by just the 5 wheel studs per corner. This will cause the wheels not to be centered on the hub correctly and you run the very real risk of the studs breaking with possible disastrous consequences

If you must fit spacers, wider hubcentric spacers (bolt on type) would be a safer option, saying that I would personally never use spacers full stop.

If you have done a search you may have already seen the link below, well worth a read.
