Hi

I m looking to upgrade from my reliable and well loved Celica to a Supra Aero top -but know nothing about it - other than it looks a great !!

I have a bunch of questions

e g will the insurance be high?

What is the mpg average for non turbo?

How does it do regarding current emissions regs?

Are they expensive to maintain?

Any reasons NOT to buy jap import?

which is better -manual/auto?

I think they are rear wheel drive - how are they in snow!

Was there a good year of manufacture- I would like aero and air con?

Most important - any know problems to look for?

Sorry for all Q's I'm sure I could find separate answers on here but don't have a lot of time and will start looking at Supras for sale this weekend.

Thanks

Insurance - Likely dpending on your circumstances

MPG - 20-25MPG

Maintain - Yes/Services need to be done well

Jap Import - No

Manual/Auto - Up to you - Stupid question

Snow - Worst cars in the world, unuseable

If you have to ask about costs then a Supra really isn't for you.

Hi

I would like to learn but apart from here I don't know anyone who owns one......and car salesman is not going to fill me in on the downside. :)

(The up-side is visible.....stunning!!!!)

Someone would probably go to look at a car if you find one, or at least post it up on here and we can have a look and tell you risk points and things to look for.

You say you don't have a lot of time, but it's a lot of money, you're really saying you want an easy answer?

will the insurance be high?

Yes. Depends on your age and location though. UK spec is generally cheaper to insure.

What is the mpg average for non turbo?

Both NA and TT will be about 20mpg.

How does it do regarding current emissions regs?

If the cats are in it'll be fine. 1 cat removed is normally OK as well. Both cats removed and you may fail an MOT. Why would you want to de-cat? Search BPU! :D

Are they expensive to maintain?

Yes. Think of it as a Supercar and you'll be OK.

Any reasons NOT to buy jap import?

Nope. Apart from insurance.

which is better -manual/auto?

Up to you. I had a manual, my next one will be an auto. Drive both and see.

I think they are rear wheel drive - how are they in snow!

BAD! Although I've never tried it, I wouldn't want to.

Was there a good year of manufacture- I would like aero and air con?

AFAIK they all have air con, there are only a few aeros about - I'm not sure what specs are available in aero TBH.

Most important - any know problems to look for?

They're pretty robust, mostly check for blue smoke.

Ok stupid here- but still keen to learn ....and there is nowhere else?

And learned today.....

I need to keep my trusty FRONT WHEEL drive Celica for winter and not sell it

....and aerotops and automatic are a given.....so would have to be jap import (why are they a problem?apart from parts and insurance?)

and I need an open cheque book!

hasn't put me off so far .....even if I just keep it polished on my driveway!!

Stunning cars!!

Thanks - at least that is constructive!

Someone told me some of them come under classic car insurance oif only used in summer- is that true?

How did you get most of your info in the end? I am not really in a rush but would like to to get something in the next couple of months

- ideally a basic red or blue aerotop to start.

Read on about them on the forum, if you don't then it could work out quite costly for you.

I spent nearly a year learning about them before I brought mine!

Don't rush into buying any car :)

ok going to look at a few tomorrow to see what I get for the money.

No doubt I will have lots of stupid questions to ask after!!

I was VERY lucky. I went and bought one from a garage in Ipswich without knowing diddly about them, but luckily it was a beaut of a car and never had any issues - it could have SOOOOO easily gone the other way!! Everything I've learnt since then is owning one and just reading random threads on this forum. I still don't know much though really.

Welcome!

There's a buyer's guide on here somewhere (edit: see the link posted above). That explains a lot of the basics, including what the different model codes (SZ, GZ, RZ, etc) mean. Well worth a read! :)

I suggest reading things like the Buyers' Guide, then taking at least a couple for a test drive. For mkIV supras, there aren't any natural-born lemons to avoid, only those that have been neglected.

Bah what's wrong with you? They're no worse than any rear wheel drive car, I drive mine in the snow and ice every year, and that's a TT.

I drive mine all year round, they're not particularly bad in the snow (no worse than any other RWD car).

I used my na in the snow' date=' tackled all but a sleep hill, just took it gently.[/quote']

:yeahthat:

I was just trying to save a life (his and a Supra!), the fact that he asked "I think they are rear wheel drive - how are they in snow!" suggested he wouldn't be very experienced in such matters.
