Different size wheels

A friend and I were discussing about running different size rims…

I mean having wider is one thing but is anyone using different size wheels as in rim size?

ie. 17” front and 18” rear?

So the question is what’s the advantage or disadvantage?

wider rim means a harder ride as you need lower profile rubbers on them, so less air, less cushion.

running 17s on the rear means you need a bigger walled tyre so better grip could be available , but id stick to the same all round

oh, just read it again. Didn't realise you meant differnet fronts to backs, thought you just meant what wis the difference in 17"s and 18" all round

I did kind of contemplate running a smaller diameter rear wheel to give the car more of a drag look with fatter profile rear tyres, but couldn't be arsed with all the faff trying to find matching rims. Also didn't know if it would actually work and look okay.

Yes you can, probably the only issue would be with the speedo due to the rolling radius of a bigger wheel. Guy on Aristo world, Lam with the really pimp Mk2 runs a 19 front 20 rear set up. I thought about it too but as Animal said couldnt be arsed with the faff of finding rims etc.

See, to me, that's arse about face. Why would you want smaller wheels up front? That would look all wrong the way I see it.

Mine was purely aesthetics, even on 19" the rears look lost in the Aristo arches.

They're 18" and 19" actually

The reasoning behind it is...smaller wheels are lighter than bigger wheels. You'll have more responsive steering than if I ran 19"'s all round.

You'll probably ask why I don't have 18"'s all round then. The reason for that is looks and the stance of the car. And also because the offset on the 19" x 12" wheel on the back was better suited to the car.

You could fit 20" wheels, as long as the tyre diameter was the same as stock you wouldn't have any speedo errors.

This car has 18 fronts and 17 rears. I like it although the offsets are a little too high on the rears. Don't know what it would do to the cars handling though.

Some of the track guys in the US use 18 up front to take larger brakes and then 17 on the rear to get the larger side wall.

The car pictured is using a setup like this from CCW.

i can't see why there would be a problem on the supra running different sized wheels front and back, the only time it would make a big problem would be on a four wheel drive car then you could get your diff to wind up (not good)

The red Titan TRD was running 19" fronts and 20" rears if that helps anything

I've been considering this for mine but not sure on the look yet. At some angles it looks quite mean, but side on it looks a bit wrong.

When I bought my supra it had 16 fronts and 17 rears, I use that set for winter tires now
