rear tyres different tread thickness

Got my replacement rear tyres today.

£90 for a pair of 255/40/zr17 Dunlop Sport 2000's.

 

only thing I was a bit concerned about was that one tyre has about 8-9mm tread and the other has about 5mm. Wasn't sure if this was dangerous with regard to one side slipping and the other not?

 

I suppose it won't matter, only that I'll be replacing both tyres when the 5mm becomes 0mm.

 

 

am I ok?

it's no different to me having worn them down myself is it?

 

that's not to say it's an economic thing to do. Might have been less costly to pay the £230 for 2x Eagle F1 GSD3's but I'm on a tight budget. Don't even know what the car repair cost is 'til Friday-ish.

what if as Michael suggested one gets a puncture. Do you replace both tyres? If they were different brand/tread pattern then I might be more fussed..

 

Plus with the sup have an LSD, surely it's possible to wear one side out by spinning the outter wheel on an oval track?

 

perhaps I'm just clutching at straws here :p

 

It's certainly better than my current burst tyre!

I suppose that makes sense (the puncture thing), you would just have to keep a close eye on the one with less tread. I'm just super-cautious with tyres, seeing as they are the only part of my car to touch the road :)

 

Hope the repair costs aren't too bad mate, are you keeping it now?

definately want to keep it. How I'll feel after a couple of weeks of fuelling it I don't know.

 

Friend is still away 'til mid July so I'll do a lot of work miles in her Nova and hopefully pick something up to use as a runabout.

I recently had an argument with a company that installs traffic counters (those rubber pipe things that straddle the road). One came loose and the 4 inch long securing screw at the detached end went under my offside rear wheel and punctured the tyre. I wrote to the company demanding that they replace the damaged tyre (which they agreed to do albeit only as a "goodwill gesture") and also that they replace the nearside tyre, as they were about half worn and only replacing one would be dangerous due to the unequal levels of grip.

 

Unfortunately, they kind of had me over barrell because I had already had the puncture repaired (I got a letter from Kwik Fit saying that they recommended replacament as the rapair was right at the limit of what they were allowed to do, and that the recommended replacement as a pair). They wouldn't have any of it. After a few letters and phonecalls I gave up.

 

The annoying thing is that now that I'm due a new pair of rears, I'm probably going to be buying a pair from a friend, so I'll have no reciept to send off to them to claim against (plus it was about 6 months ago now).

 

Anyway, my point is that I though it was safer to drive around during the Winter with one puncture repaired tyre than one part worn tyre and one new tyre, even though it would have been free.

Bad idea, both the part-worn bit and the unequal tread depth.

 

What is to say those tires have not got structural damage by being kerbed?

 

Economising on tires on a high-performance car is silly. Surely there is something else you could save on, rather than safety items?

Where do you think all these part worn tyres come from?

I mean, there are sure a lot of second hand tyres for sale, a lot more than could ever be coming off write-off cars.

Well, a lot of them are tyres that have been repaired, after the tyre shop has sold the punter some new tyres because their damaged one "Can't be repaired"

 

I used to work in the part-worn tyre business when I was a teenager. My Dad owned a tyre business and a scrapyard.

 

To be honest, I'd be very reluctant to put some of the tyres we used to sell on my own Supra.

this was in technical and Im hoping to keep the technical section for seriously technical things and this section for general mkiv supra discussions.

 

Wasnt sure if the Viagra one was a joke or not and as it was going to go off on the highly amusing 'hard on' based joke theme I thought chit chat was better.

So what did u do in the end with the tyre situation carlos.Sorry if I missed it somewhere.I had a puncture from a mahoosive nail on my left rear tyre this morning.The right side still has plenty of thread so I would like to know if I should just replace one/both.They are Vredesteins as well and my local garage can't get hold of them.Good tyres these,I'll have to check online to mailorder it once I know whether to replace one or both.

yep thats not to good having different tread depths on the rear of a rear drive car,it will overwork your diff mate..the diff will kind of think its constantly cornering all the time as the rolling radius will be loads different between the two..really upsets the clutchplates in a limited slip diff and overheats the oil too...ok localy but dont do a long motorway dash with it...the grip wont be affected unless its really wet and one gets down to say 3mm or so but it will put a bit more weight on the lower treaded one and wear it out faster.
