Guys,

I have a fairly large install in the motor, and yesterday it developed a problem.
It sounded like the CD was skipping, then all of a sudden the headunit lost power! I couldn't turn it back on.
I got it home and took the dash off, hoping it was just a loose power cable, but no! all was ok at the rear of the unit! I figured it could either be a fuse or a loose wire somewhere in the boot.

I have an Apline headunit which draw power from the boot, its connected to a lightening cap. There are also two Rockford fosgate amps, one powers the sub and one powers the front components. There are two cross-overs and a couple of things which look like big fuses. It is all connected to a Symmetry digital equaliser.
(I didn't do the install and have little idea about how it all works!)

After having a brief look around I couldn't see any problems, all fuses appeared to be ok as did the wiring (that I could get to!).
I eventually gave up thinking I had a blown head unit or that a specialist would need to have a look.

However this morning on the way to work the headunit powered on and started playing! All was fine for about 10 minutes at which point the sound started altering, it would cease using the sub, and all bass would come through the front components, or suddenly there'd be no treble coming through the components, then power would be lost for a sec, then on again!

I am lost for ideas, and am ready to take it to a professional to sort out.

Just wondered if any of you guys may have an idea as to what is going on?

Cheers

Going by your description, I would suspect the Rockford processor. There aren't too many items that can remove solely the treble from your system unless it's got a separate amp for the tweeters.
The first things I would check are the power connections to the battery, cap, any distribution blocks and amp terminals. Remember to do this for both live and earth. (I expect the earth will be bolted to the bodywork somewhere).

An intermittant fault like that could take ages to find. If you can check all the connections that may at least keep your labour charges down... Although, I would still check them myself if you brought it to me to checkover
