Timwildman
I'm not an expert, but I think they always say check the fluid level first.
albundy68
very few trip boxes around = not much knowlage on them, if it is the box rather than the fluid, it could be expensive,

What sort of miles has the car done? When was it last serviced?
Guest Arshad
Thanks for all the reply guys...really apreaciate the help. Ive had the car for just over 3 years and its been serviced every 6 months by the dealer i got the car of. However ive missed the last 2 services due to a divirce and serious finincal problems... its done just over 50K miles the car broke down this morning so i think the clutch has completly gone now.... The car wont even start now.. but i think this is a safty feature to avoid further damage... i havent rang around for prices yet becuase i cant afford to have the work done... i know its gona cost a bomb and was wondering if any of you guys knew if it is defo the clutch and how much it might cost to sort this out ...and get my pride and joy back on the road
matt
Can't understand why it won't start just cos the box is dicky. It may be something completely different. Maybe its possible to take the box ecu out of the equation and see if the car starts? A dodgy speedo conversion/delimiter could well cause slippage... Also the autos need a specific fluid (Typeiv) don't know for sure if the Trips do.......if something else has been used this can cause problems HTH
Guest Arshad
I have spoken to the dealers.. they said it a safey cut off the car knows clutch is gone and its cut power to the spark plugs anyway am begining to think that if i hadent missed the 2 services this might not have happened... Does anybody know how long a clutch should last in a 1998 VVTI triptronic Supra i've had the car for 3 years and it only had 17K on the clock when i got the dealers from a toyota dealer.. i had a MR2 for 3 years b4 i got the supra and never had to replace the clutch in that... Keith C
The tiptronic is an auto based system, not a manual one, so it has a torque converter, not a clutch. Roughly where are you, as I know of a superb automatics place down in the south.

ARSHAD I think the box is the same as the normal auto, just diffrent ecu, and control gubbins. If the fluid is low it will cause problems. Never heard of an engine being shut down to protect the box though. But that doesn't mean it wont happen. there is a good thread about the auto somewhere, try a search. Auto gearboxes do have clutches, more than one, but they're not what you usually think of as a clutch, not being manually operated etc
