Hi Guys,

I picked up my N/A auto today, and have been driving it all day long, i totally love it (Ill post pics tom) :)

I have a few concerns.

1. The temp gauge doesnt go up much even after driving the car for many miles, the good thing is that once the engine has warmed up there isnt any smoke coming out of the exhaust.

2. the engine idles at 1,400 ish rpm, is this normal?

3. The car makes a little noise when turning to the left

Ill be taking the car to Keron for a service and a thorough check.

Congratulations

Nothing to worry about, the highest the temp gauge will normally go is half way, if it starts going into the red then it's time to worry.

NA's do tend to idle quite high.

3. The car makes a little noise when turning to the left

What sort of noise, a whining noise? If so may be low PAS fluid.

Worth giving it a service and fluid change.

The temperature needle not moving much, and the idle always being high might be linked. Probably recapping what others have said here, but the temperature needle should be in the centre of the gauge after a few minutes' driving, and stay there.

The cold idle can be as high as 2000rpm on an NA, but it should drop to about 900rpm, again after a few minutes' driving.

The heater not getting warm could be caused by an old inefficient heater matrix (common problem, not easy to fix unfortunately, but it is fixable).

or.....

All of these symptoms *could* be caused by a lack of a thermostat altogether. It's possible to run most cars without a thermostat to counteract an overheating problem that the car might have. Without a thermostat, the temperature gauge will barely move off the cold mark no matter how long you drive it for. The car will use lots of fuel, and it definitely isn't recommended because it's a bodge to mask a problem. That would explain your high idle (because the engine's always in cold-idle mode), and also the cabin not getting warm (the cabin heater uses the same coolant as the engine. If the engine coolant doesn't get warm, neither will the heater).

thanks stevie, looks like i have one of two problems, i just hope its the 2nd one, as ive read replacing the matrix can be expensive

Mine idles quite high when you first start it up in the cold but then drops to 1k or just under when it's a bit warmer.

Mine also has a buggered matrix and it's a pain to fix so i'm not even going to bother now.

im just itching to take my car to Keron now just to get some answers.

are there any supra specialists in birmingham?

  • 2 weeks later...

I got my Supra looked at, and there wasn't a thermostat installed :wtf:

This explains why i was always idling around 1500rpm even after driving for over 30mins.

After i got a thermostat installed, my car is now idling around 1000rpm and the temp guage is in the middle where it should be, but the air coming into the cabin has warmed up but not warm enough :cold: so could be a heater matrix problem!!!!

Do you guys reckon a previous owner was trying to mask an engine over heating problem? will i see this problem in the summer when the temp will be warmer? also what can i do to sort this potential problem out? install an intercooler?

Could of been trying to mask the heater matrix problem by removing the thermostat.

Oh and N/A's don't have intercooler's

I just hope its nothing too serious, i can live without hot air :)

Oh its just that i thought i saw a few pics of n/a's with a front mounted intercooler? :conf:

If it's the heater matrix you won't want to leave it as the car will shit itself and probably warp the head.

Oh and intercoolers are for supplying cold air to the turbo, it might of been N/A - T conversions you've seen.

I'll find out exactly what the problem is when i go to see Keron sometime this week, once he is free to see me.

I apologise for being such a n00b :)
