Elephant insurance

Hi

Quite a few of you recommend Elephant insurance.

You can get a quote online for a Uk car but not for an Import, they say you have to phone them.

I gave them a ring but they said they wouldn't insure a TT import.

I have 3 years no claims on my van but I will have to start afresh with zero no claims for an additional vehicle.

I was quoted £670 fully comp for the Uk car.

Norwich Union is £1847 fully comp for the import.

Can anyone recommend any other insurance companies.

Most of them don't give you an online quote.

I'll probably give Tesco a ring tomorrow.

I didn't realise there would be such a difference in insurance between the Uk and J spec cars. Why?

Nope, not so. They list imports online so they will insure them over the phone. Mine is insured with them.

Again, not so. You can transfer your NCB across to your Supra. Simply move whatever vehicle you have insured for the NCB across to Elephant (ie, insure it with them) and you can then apply your NCB to anything you insure with them.

Yes, unfortunately this is well documented and complete nonsense. Go back to Elephant and try again - they WILL insure imports and competitively too!

They've said that to me in the past too. I asked them how come there are loads of people on here insured with them? It just depends on if you speak to a numpty or not when you phone. Try A Plan, they have a special schemes thing for Jap imports.

It's perception. In theory an import will need any parts importing, which costs more. There may also be sourcing problems too.

Unfortunately this theory doesn't take individual cars into account. While it's fair enough with, say, a limited edition version of a model that was only available in Japan, something like a Supra where it shares loads of common parts and has Toyota's backing that they can supply parts just as easily as a UK car is a bit of a nonsense. Insurance companies also tend to only recognise manufacturer's sourcing routes - doesn't matter if next door to the Toyota garage you've got a Supra specialist who knows exactly the people to talk to to get spares.

I think elephant have now gone the same way as Tesco/direct line in the past month and changed their underwriting policies. They won't insure under 25's on modded/high performance

You can get a quite for an Import on-line, as long as you know the reg number of the car. I've just got a quote for me driving my standard *cough* MKIV 1995 import, 29 years old with just 2 years ncb, no claims or convictions, £654 fully comp, but that was 10 month, or £770 for a year.

Is this true? I hope it isnt! otherwise that'll mean I wont be able to insure any car I actually want when I hit 21!

its true, they will only take renewal business not new, there have been a few posts about it on various boards recently, ring them and see !

Crap! Thanks for the heads up though, it'll give me time to think of something else to buy.

I'm 22 with 4 points (in the last 5 year.... 15 in total) and 2 years no claims with my misses insured (no points, no no claims) and paying £1600 on an import TT full comp. In my mind Elephant are mucking fagic!

I'd double check it if I were you, the site often gets the type of car wrong if you put just a reg no. in. It might well think you have a MkIII Supra or a UK car or something. Fine until you need to claim and they twist their way out of it.
